Butterfly Wing Cape
Step 1
From the template provided, cut out:
- 2x whole base wing pieces from yellow felt fabric
- 4x top section of wing pieces from royal felt fabric
- 2x middle section of wing pieces from light green felt fabric
- 2x middle section of wing pieces from dark green felt fabric
- 2x base section of wing pieces from aqua blue felt fabric
- 2x base section of wing pieces from dark purple felt fabric
- 2x circles from purple felt for top section
- 2x circles from aqua blue felt for top section
- 12x circles from hot pink/wine felt for middle section
- 4x circles from red felt for base sections
- 2x middle spine strips from yellow felt fabric
Step 2
Pin cut circles to the corresponding top and middle sections on the royal, light and dark green felt pieces. Top stitch in place 3mm in from circle's outer edges.
Cut out the inner inserts from the top and middle sections on the royal, light and dark green felt pieces. Cut out the eye shaped insert from the base sections on the aqua blue and purple felt pieces.
Step 3
Lay the two base wing pieces flat side by side. Pin the corresponding felt sections of on top of the base pieces aligning the outer side curved edges. Ensure that the middle and base sections are mirrored on the opposite sides on either base piece, to ensure that when sewn together the colours will back onto each other.
Sew sections to the base wing pieces 5mm in from the outer edges of the sections and the cut-out inserts.
Pin the red cut circles to the base sections in the middle of the eye shaped insert as per template. Top stitch in place 3mm in from circle's outer edges.
Step 4
Pin the middle spine cut pieces to the center of each wing to cover up any uneven edges in the middle back of wings. Top stitch in place.
Cut elastic into 2 lengths each measuring 20cm. Make each length into a loop, baste ends together. Pin loops to one of the felt cape pieces at the back, as indicated on the top outer section of wings, with the loops extending up out the top of the cape piece.
With wrong sides facing, lay the two wing cape felt pieces together aligning all outer edges.
Pin and then sew together topstitching 5mm in from all the outer edges of the wing cape.
Pin and stitch through both layers of cape through middle of the cut inserts on the top and middle sections.
Step 5
Pin the loop side of the hook and loop tape to the top right side of cape as per indicated on the template.
Pin the hook side of the hook and loop tape to the back left side of cape as per indicated on the template.
Sew tape to the cape by sewing around the edges of the tape and a cross through from corner to corner.
Caterpillar Mask
Step 1
From the template provided, cut out 2x mask pieces from red felt fabric.
Cut elastic to a length of 13cm shorter than the child's head circumference.
Pin one end of the elastic to the back side of one of the mask pieces, as per indicated on the side of the template. With the raw edge of the elastic 1.5cm in from outer edge of mask, sew in place 5mm in from mask edge.
Place mask on child's face, and pin other side on elastic to other side of mask, adjusting elastic length to fit comfortably around the back of the child's head. Trim elastic if needed. Remove mask and stitch elastic end to other side of mask.
Step 2
Bend chenille stick into a flat U shape with a 5cm flat base edge.
Place the chenille stick on to the same mask piece as the elastic, on the back in the centre, 2cm down from the top edge of mask. Glue flat base of chenille stick to felt mask.
If desired, roll the top of the chenille stick into small swirls at the top to create a rounded top finish.
Step 3
Cut a piece each measuring 8cm x 13cm from yellow felt and Vliesofix bonding paper.
Cut a piece each measuring 6cm x 12cm from green felt and Vliesofix bonding paper.
Fuse Vliesofix to back of corresponding felt pieces.
From template provided, trace the outer eye rings from template provided on to the paper side of yellow felt piece and the inner eye rings on to the paper of the green felt piece.
Using sharp scissors, cut out eye rings from felt. Remove paper backing.
Step 4
With the glue side down, place the outer rings onto the front of the remaining mask felt piece. Fuse in place. Repeat with the inner eye rings, placing the green rings on top of the inner rings. Fuse in place.
Step 5
With wrong sides together, layer and pin mask pieces, aligning all edges.
Top stitch layers together 5mm in from the outer edges of the mask.
Top stitch the inner, then outer eye rings through all layers of the mask.
