Hexagon Bag
*The Hexagon bag is hand pieced, i.e., hexagons are hand stitched together.
Hexagon Bag
28 x full hexagons, 8 x 1/2 hexagons
- Cut fabric 1cm larger around all sides of the paper shapes. Follow instructions included in paper piece packet. Place paper in the centre of fabric, turn in 1cm on all sides and either use a glue stick or hand stitch with large basting stitches to hold fabric in place. Continue for all 28 full hexagons and 8 half hexagons.
- Stitch the hexagons together by placing two together. Whip stitch along the folded edge without stitching through the paper.
- Place hexagons in desired rows of 4, 1/2 + 3 + 1/2, and so on until you have pieced together 8 rows.
- Stitch side together. Turn bag inside out and start removing the paper pieces from each hexagon then with the sewing machine sew across the bottom with a 6mm seam.
- Line side seam and bottom seam up to form a triangle in the corner of the bag. Measure 2.5 from point of triangle in and stitch across. Press under to form a flat bottom to the bag. Cut lining, top casing and cord, as follows:
- Lining 46cm x 28.5 cm
- Top casing 2 x 21.5cm
- Cord 2 x 70cm - Turn both short ends on casing in 6mm and then 1cm. Stitch in place. Fold casing over and press. Pin casing to the top edges of the outer bag matching centres and evenly spaced from each side of bag sides. Baste across using a 1cm seam allowance.
- Sew side and bottom of lining leaving an opening in bottom seam to turn bag through. Repeat step 5.
- With lining inside out place over the outer bag with right sides together and matching seams and centres, sew around top of bag opening. Pull bag through.
- Slip stitch opening closed.
- Cut 2 pieces of cord each 31cm long. With a safety pin thread through casing.
- Tie ends with a knot.
Patched Square Bag
- From the Warlu fabric cut 45 x 2 1/2" squares
- Piece all the squares together so that you have 9 sq across x 5sq down.
- Sew side seam with a 6mm allowance.
- Sew across bottom with a 6mm seam allowance.
- When finished the size will be 51cm x 26cm, so cut the lining at this size.
- Continue as for hexagon bag from Step 5.
Patched Bag
Piece together random size rectangles and squares together to make a finished piece 51cm x 26cm. Cut lining to the same size and continue on from Step 5.
