What Are Sheer Roller Blinds?

Also referred to as sunscreen blinds or light filtering blinds, sheer roller blinds are semi-transparent blinds that allow you to see outside during the day while preventing anyone outside from seeing in. They diffuse light as it comes through the window, softening it and preventing strong sunlight from damaging the inside of your home.

Why So Many Australians Love Sheer Roller Blinds

Sheer roller blinds are a valued window dressing option in Australia for a number of reasons. Their light filtering fabric allows natural light to illuminate your space while providing a sense of daytime privacy. The sheer fabric also helps to reduce the glare of the sun and offers protection from UV rays. With the ability to block a significant portion of harmful rays, sheer roller blinds also work to help prevent your furniture and flooring from fading.

Picking the Right Fit For Your Windows

Before measuring your windows, first decide whether you'll be installing your blinds inside your window architrave, or if you'll be going with an outside mount. When it comes time to start measuring your windows for your blinds, you should consider the direction your windows face as well as how much privacy you want during the day. Make sure to read through our helpful buying guide on how to measure your windows for blinds for more detailed information.

Pair Them Up for Day-to-Night Control

If you're wanting to ensure complete privacy in the evenings, consider pairing your sheer roller blinds with a blockout blind. At Spotlight, we also offer a range of double roller blinds systems with a sheer and a blockout blind both on the same hardware, allowing you to switch between a sheer roller blind during the day and a blockout blind for the evening. This provides you with full light and privacy control around the clock. Alternatively, you could also layer your sheer roller blind with blockout curtains for a softer look.

Can You See Through Sheer Roller Blinds at Night?

When interior lights are on at night, sheer roller blinds do not provide full privacy. When it is brighter outside during the day, it makes it difficult for people outside to see in, whereas when it's brighter inside in the evenings, it makes it easier for people to see inside. That's why we recommend pairing your sheer roller blinds with a blockout solution, such as a blockout roller blind or blockout curtains.

Which Rooms Work Best with Sheer Roller Blinds?

Living rooms benefit from soft diffused light during the day. With natural light filtering through the fabric of sheer roller blinds, it makes it easy to establish a calming and welcoming space in your living room. On the other hand, while sheer roller blinds aren't the best choice for bedrooms, pairing them with a blockout blind or pair of blockout curtains will provide you with that privacy you need while allowing you the choice to switch to the light filtering benefits of sheer roller blinds during the day.

Keeping Your Sheer Roller Blinds Looking Their Best

Sheer roller blinds are generally low-maintenance. Because they are often made from polyester, sheer roller blinds can be spot cleaned with a damp cloth if you ever need to clean them. Make sure to let your sheer roller blinds dry completely before rolling them up again. We recommend routinely dusting your blinds with a soft cloth to keep them looking their best.
