What are the differences between polyester, polycotton and cotton bed linen?
Polyester bed linen is hard-wearing and easy to care for, and is usually the most budget-friendly bed linen in our range. It does not offer the breathability of cotton material, but is silky and smooth to the touch.
Polyester-cotton or Polycotton bed linen is, as the name suggests, a blend of polyester and cotton, and will offer better circulation than polyester alone, while still being easy to care for and reasonably priced.
Cotton bed linen is made from 100% natural material that allows you to regulate your body temperature regardless of the weather. Cotton bed linen will come in a range of options from regular to Egyptian cotton, which is reflected in both the thread count and the price. Cotton with a high thread count of 800 or more will be the softest and most luxurious.
Flannelette bed linen is also made from cotton, but the fibres are brushed vigorously during the manufacturing process which gives it a soft feel (it is also known as brushed cotton). It is ideal for colder months as it provides extra warmth.
How should I care for my bed linen?
Please always check the labels on your new bed linen as manufacturers care and laundry instructions may vary. Most bed linen can be machine washed and tumble dried, but occasionally other instructions apply. Always take care to wash dark or vibrant colour separately, and it is recommended to wash all new bed linen before first use, to remove any remaining traces of dye, or dirt collected in transport.
Bed linen manufacturers advise that you avoid over-drying bed linen in a tumble dryer, as this may result in more creasing, and it damages the fibres which will shorten the life of your bed linen. Check the label for ironing instructions and ideally iron on the reverse side where possible.
