  • Sewing Machine: Making a world of sewing projects possible, sewing machines from trusted brands such as Singer help speed up your sewing process.
  • Scissors: You'll need to cut your pieces of fabric before sewing your dress. Spotlight is home to a great range of scissors and cutting tools, including brands such as Fiskars, for all your sewing project needs.
  • Tape Measure: Recording accurate measurements is integral to making a dress that fits perfectly. Use a measuring tape such as the Birch Tape Measure to record your measurements.
  • Tailor's Chalk: Mark where you need to cut or sew your fabric without damaging the patterns with tailor's chalk.
  • Pins: You'll often need to secure your fabric in place before sewing your creation together. Pins help to prevent fabric from shifting when sewing and allow for precision when matching any seams and patterns together.
  • Thread: With any sewing project you'll need sewing thread that connects pieces of fabric and holds your sewing creations in place. Available in a range of different colours, sewing thread can also be used to add a decorative accent to your sewing projects. Try to match the thread to the fabric you have chosen.

How to Sew a Dress

Follow these three simple steps and learn how to sew a dress with ease.

1. Measure - Calculate How Much Fabric You'll Need

Measure the shirred edge of the fabric to be 7 to 10 cm less than your bust measurement, then cut to size.

2. Sew - Stitch Your Fabrics Together

With the right sides together, sew the 2 cut edges together. This will become the back seam of the dress. Mark the length you want the dress to be and cut 1 cm below this marking.

3. Finish - Stitch and Sew Your Hems

Finish the edge with an overlocker or zig zag stitch and sew a 1 cm hem.

You can experiment with different bust measurements to see if you prefer the shirring to fit a little looser or a little tighter.
