1. Choosing and Assembling Your Tension Curtain Rod

Begin your DIY endeavour by measuring your archway, ensuring your tension rod can fit between the two walls. Once you've recorded your measurements, it's time to start shopping! Spotlight's range of tension rods is available in expandable sizes - for example, you'll often see measurements such as 80 - 140 cm. In shopping for tension rods for a DIY Christmas garland, make sure the size of your architrave or walls lies within the measurement range of your chosen curtain rod.

In installing your tension rod to create the garland, compress the rod, making sure it's smaller than the space between your walls. Then allow the tension rod to expand within the recess and lock it into place. Some rods may require a little twisting and turning to make sure they're stable. Start by positioning your tension rod slightly higher than eye level to make sure it's easy for you to decorate.

Now the fun part begins. Shop for a long and luscious faux garland. In her project, Velda used the Jolly & Joy 2.7 m Frosted Christmas Garland, complete with faux snow for a winter wonderland element. Velda started around a quarter of the way up the garland, weaving it around the rod to create a lively cascading effect evenly on both ends of the tension rod.

There are so many styles you can adopt in your Christmas decorating. Spotlight offers a wide range of Christmas decorations, so you can rest assured knowing you can find a range of decorations to complement your festive theme. For this DIY Christmas garland, Velda went for a more traditional Christmas style approach, wrapping elegant LED lights around the garland for a lively illuminated display, as well as adding bells and Christmas baubles in a traditional Christmas colour palette of greens and reds, creating bunches of around three baubles and looping them onto the branches of the garland. Velda also added an adorable Christmas bow in the centre of the garland for the perfect finishing touch.

4. Move Your Christmas Garland Into Position

After adding the decorations, it's time to move your creation into position. With some assistance and the help of a stepping stool, Velda lifted the rod, moving it up the wall closer to the ceiling for a higher vantage point. When moving the rod, make sure it is stabilised before stepping away. And there you have it, a lovely Christmas garland that is sure to impress your guests.
