What Kinds Of Visual Journals Can You Find At Spotlight?

We've got a wonderful range of visual diaries for you to choose from!

• Spiral-bound visual diaries: These visual diaries are designed so that their pages can be easily removed. Spiral bound pages can easily be taken out by simply ripping them from their binding, making them ideal if you like to pin your sketches up for inspiration or want to display any you are particularly proud of.
• Case-bound visual diaries: These visual diaries are bound like a classic hardcover book, so the pages aren't easy to remove. However, these sturdy visual diaries are great for keeping your sketches safe and are also ideal for when you need to create an official visual diary for visual presentation.
• A6 to A3 visual diaries: You can find the perfect-sized visual diary here, from small A6 diaries that will fit in your pocket to large A3 diaries great for creating large, detailed sketches.

Visual Diary FAQs

Is the paper in a visual diary acid-free?

Many of our visual diaries feature acid-free paper, designed to help protect your artwork over time. This means your sketches, paintings and notes are less likely to yellow or deteriorate with age. You'll also find a range of paper GSMs and sizes, making it easy to choose the right visual diary for your creative needs at Spotlight in store today.

Can a visual diary handle markers without bleed-through?

Our visual diaries can absolutely handle markers - but it really comes down to the paper weight and quality. Our selection includes thicker, high-GSM pages designed to reduce bleed-through and keep your artwork looking clean and vibrant. For best results, choose heavier paper if you're working with alcohol markers or heavy inking for smooth, confident creative expression every time.

Is it better to have a hardcover or softcover visual diary?

It really depends on how you like to create! A hardcover visual diary offers extra durability and a firm surface, making it great for sketching on the go. A softcover option is lighter, flexible and easy to carry in bags or folders. Both are great choices, so it comes down to your lifestyle and how portable you need it to be.

Which visual diary do art schools recommend?

Art schools don't usually recommend one specific visual diary, but they do tend to favour high-quality, acid-free paper with a decent weight (often 100gsm and above) to handle a range of media. A4 is commonly preferred for portability and ease of storage. Ultimately, they look for durability, good paper quality, and enough flexibility for sketching, painting and mixed media work.
