PRIMA COORDINATES FABRIC LUNCH BAG
Level: Beginner
What you'll need:
- Outer fabric: 30 cm x 80 cm (cut on the fold - folded size 30 x 40 cm)
- Lining fabric: 30 cm x 80 cm (cut on the fold - folded size 30 x 40 cm)
- Medium-weight interfacing for outer (30 x 40 cm after fusing)
- 5cm Velcro
- Sewing machine, thread, scissors, pins or clips
Instructions
Seam allowance: 1/4" (6mm) used throughout all steps.
Step 1 - Prepare Your Pieces
- Cut outer and lining fabric 30 x 80 cm.
- Fold each piece in half along the long edge - 30 x 40 cm folded.
- The fold will be the bottom of the bag.
- Fuse medium-weight interfacing to the wrong side of the outer fabric.
Step 2 - Attach The Velcro
- Before sewing the bag sides, attach Velcro to the outer fabric only.
- Keep 1/4" (6 mm) seam allowance clear at the very top edge so the Velcro will not be caught when the outer bag is joined to the lining.
Velcro Piece A (lower piece):
- Place a 5 cm strip on the outside of the outer fabric, about 2.5 cm (1") down from the top edge, leaving the 1/4" seam allowance gap.
- Centre horizontally and stitch in place.
Velcro Piece B (upper piece):
- Place the matching 5 cm strip on the opposite side, right at the top edge, leaving the 1/4" seam allowance.
- These will align when the bag top is rolled down to close.
Step 3 - Sew The Outer Bag
- With the outer fabric folded (30 x 40 cm), sew both side seams.
- Cut a 5 x 5 cm square from each bottom corner.
- Open each corner, match seams, and sew straight across to create boxed corners.
Step 4 - Sew The Lining
Repeat the same steps for the lining:
- Sew side seams
- Cut 5 x 5 cm corners
- Sew boxed corners
- (Fold remains the bottom.)
Step 5 - Join Outer + Lining
- Join outer + lining
- Turn the outer bag right-side out.
- Keep the lining wrong-side out.
- Insert the outer bag into the lining so right sides are together.
- Align the top raw edges and use pins or sewing clips to keep layers together.
- Smooth the lining inside so it stays out of the seam path.
Step 6 - Sew The Top Edge
- Sew around the top edge, leaving a turning gap.
- Turn the bag right-side out through the gap.
- Push the lining inside and press the top edge flat.
Step 7 - Topstitch For Structure (Creating defined corners)
- Top edge: Topstitch all the way around.
- Bottom panel: Topstitch around all four sides of the bottom rectangle to reinforce the base.
- Vertical edges / corners: From each of the four bottom corners, sew a straight line up to the top edge on the front, back, and both sides. These lines create the defined vertical edges of the box shape (not along existing seams).
Tips while topstitching:
- Use pins or sewing clips to keep layers aligned so the lining is caught.
- Smooth your hand inside the bag to ensure no extra fabric is caught, especially around the bottom corners.
- Go slowly around the bottom - this part can be tricky.
Step 8: Finish
- Roll the top down and close with the Velcro.
- Your lunch bag is complete!
