BERRY BESTIES QUILT & CUSHION

What you'll need:
Berry Besties Quilt
- 9 assorted quilting cotton fabrics (approx. 25 cm each or equivalent scraps)
- 4 m backing fabric
- 60" x 70" approx. batting
- 50 cm binding fabric
- Coordinating thread

- Assorted quilting cotton fabrics to match quilt
- 18" square approx. batting
- Backing fabric for envelope closure
- 18" x 18" cushion insert
- Coordinating thread

Instructions
WOF: Width of Fabric
Berry Besties Quilt
Cutting
Quilt Top
Cut 99 x 6 1/2" squares.
Example: 11 squares from each of 9 fabrics.
Binding
Cut 7 strips at 2 1/2" wide (WOF).
Construction
Step 1 - Layout
Arrange squares into 9 rows of 11 squares. Distribute prints and colours evenly and avoid placing identical fabrics next to each other.
Step 2 - Sew Rows
Using a 1/4" seam allowance, sew squares together into rows. Press seams to one side, alternating direction each row.
Step 3 - Join Rows
Sew rows together, matching seams. Press seams flat.
Step 4 - Quilt Top
Press finished quilt top thoroughly and trim edges to square if required.
Quilting
Step 5 - Prepare Quilt Sandwich
Layer backing fabric right side down, batting, then quilt top right side up. Smooth layers and baste.
Step 6 - Quilt
Quilt using straight lines along seams or in a grid pattern, ensuring quilting is evenly spaced across the quilt.
Step 7 - Trim
Trim excess batting and backing and square quilt.
Binding
Step 8 - Bind Quilt
Join binding strips end to end and press in half lengthwise. Sew binding to quilt front using a 1/4" seam allowance. Fold binding to the back and stitch down to finish.

Cutting
Cushion Front
Cut 25 x 4" squares (finishes at 3 1/2").
Envelope Back
Cut 2 rectangles approx. 17" x 12".
Construction
Step 1 - Cushion Front
Arrange squares into a 5 x 5 layout. Sew into rows using a 1/4" seam allowance, then join rows and press.
Step 2 - Quilt Front
Place patchwork front onto batting with no backing fabric. Quilt diagonal lines across the cushion front.
Step 3 - Prepare Back
Hem one long edge of each backing piece. Overlap hemmed edges to form envelope closure.
Step 4 - Assemble Cushion
Place quilted front right side up. Place backing pieces right side down, overlapping at centre. Sew around all edges using a 1/4" seam allowance.
Step 5 - Finish
Turn right side out and press. Topstitch 1/4" in from the edge around entire cushion. Insert cushion.
