1st Surfboard Steps
Step 1 - Preparation for both boards
Use a moist flat brush to gesso the front surface and edges of each board. Once dry, apply another coat of gesso.
Step 2 - Preparation for both boards
Pencil in rough outline of design by drawing basic shapes, with the same design replicated across both boards. Completed board images can be referenced for noting further details.
Note: The following steps apply to one board to be the coloured design. Keep the 2nd board clean for now.
Step 3
Byron Matte Acrylic: Royal Blue + White (Mix to create a lighter sky blue)
Use a smaller flat or round brush to paint in the sky areas, leaving room around where clouds and froth of the wave will be placed.
Step 4
Byron Matte Paint: Canary Yellow and Red
Mix some yellow and red together to create an orange on a palette and use to paint in the sun.
Step 5
Kent Urban markers: Blue, Indigo Blue, Metallic Blue.
Use various blues to start filling in the wave with loose movement lines and blocks of colour.
Step 6
Kent Urban marker: Light Turquoise
Colour in the Turtle, the hanging palm fronds at the top of the board, and some sparse linear work on the sea to the right of the wave, as seen in the images. Start adding in some turquoise wave lines inside the wave as well.
Step 7
Kent Urban markers: Super Red, Pink, Metallic Purple.
Outline the flower petals in red, and some line work coming into the petals from the centre of the flower, as shown. Colour in the petals using pink. Use Metallic Purple to draw in the outer centre of the flower.
Step 8
Kent Urban markers: Super Red, pink
Use red in sections of the sea coral structure at base of board as seen. Supplement with pink in other areas of the coral as shown. Also colour in pink and red on the waving seaweed to the right side of the turtle.
Step 9
Kent Urban markers: Metallic Purple, Metallic Pink.
Colour in and outline the more flower-like shapes at the base of the board using these colours as seen.
Step 10
Kent Urban markers: Yellow Ochre, Pastel Pink, Pastel Yellow.
Use Ochre to draw in squiggle lines below the coral at base of the board as shown. Fill in bottom and top created sections with pastel pink and the middle section using pastel yellow.
Step 11
Kent Urban marker: Green
Use Green to colour in the squiggly seaweed on the left base of board and the mountains.
Step 12
Kent Urban marker: Metallic Purple
Introduce segments of purple in around the seaweed, turtle and parts of wave.
Step 13
Kent Urban markers: Yellow, Pastel Yellow
Roughly colour in the center of the sea below the mountains to create a sun reflection. Introduce some pastel yellow around the yellow, pooling into the turquoise in parts.
Step 14
Kent Urban marker: Metallic Green
Outline mountains, base of mountains and squiggly seaweed with the metallic green.
Step 15
Kent Urban Markers: Green, Metallic Green, Dark Green
Use Green to draw and colour the individual leaf shaped weed on right side of the turtle in around the pink seaweed. Add some green into the edging of the palm fronds, and some metallic green into the outer edging as well. Outline the palm fronds with dark green. Use metallic green and dark green to draw in the curved centre line of each frond.
Step 16
Byron Matte Acrylic: Turquoise
Paint some turquoise in the left sides and base of mountains, and add some turquoise to the palm fronds for contrast. Also outline the turtle, paint in the shapes within the turtle shell, and add some fine markings on the turtle's head and flippers.
Step 17
Kent Urban markers: Light Blue
Mark in some Light blue loose curved lines inside the wave. Add some light blue in amongst the turquoise in the water where the sunlight is reflected.
Step 18
Kent Urban marker: Lilac, White
Add some loose curved Lilac lines to add form to create the clouds, along with blocking in clouds with white. Draw in white into where the froth is on wave and the linear spaces as seen in images.
Step 19
Kent Urban marker: Black
Use to outline the turtle, and colour in selected lines and areas inside the wave. Add some black outlining to the pink coral and seaweed as seen.
2nd Surfboard Steps (using Icon pack colours: Gold, Silver, Black, White).
Continued on from the first two steps of preparation for both boards:
Step 3
Kent Urban markers: Gold, White
Colour the sun in gold and the innermost area of the sunlight reflecting on the water. Add in some white in around the gold on the water.
Step 4
Kent Urban markers: Silver
Colour in the rest of the calm sea around the white using silver. Colour in the sky, leaving white space where the clouds are.
Step 5
Kent Urban marker: Black
Outline the mountains and colour in a little of the left side of each mountain.
Step 6
Kent Urban marker: White
Colour and mark in areas that are seen as white in the wave when referencing the first completed colour surfboard. Mark some curved gold lines to add form to the clouds and while it's still wet, pull it slightly into your application of white while colouring in the clouds.
Step 7
Kent Urban marker: Black
Mark in the outline of the turtle and some of the line work seen in the wave as shown.
Step 8
Kent Urban marker: Silver
Colour in some areas of the wave and water around the turtle as shown.
Step 9
Kent Urban marker: Gold
Draw in the outline of the squiggly seaweed.
Step 10:
Kent Urban marker: Silver
Colour in and/or outline the individual coral branches next to the squiggly seaweed as seen.
Step 11:
Kent Urban marker: Black
Black in around the flower-like sea plant and additional areas around seaweed as shown. Black in white section of the wave shape in front of the turtle behind the squiggly seaweed.
Step 12:
Kent Urban marker: Gold, White.
Colour in squiggly seaweed. Draw in two horizontal squiggly lines below the coral and paint in the top and bottom segments that these create. Also, add gold outline and some colouring to the wavy seaweed to the right side of the turtle. Let this bleed into the white as you fill in the rest of this seaweed.
Step 13
Kent Urban marker: Silver
Colour in around the seaweed just completed, draw individual leaf seaweed shapes and colour in, as seen.
Step 14
Kent Urban marker: Gold, Silver
Colour in the flower-like sea plant shapes on the lower right side using Gold. Once dry, add a silver dot in the centre of each flower-like shape. Also use Silver to colour the middle squiggly section at the very base of the board between the 2 gold sections.
Step 15
Kent Urban marker: White, Gold, Black
Colour white in around the squiggly seaweed in one section, as shown. Colour gold in the blank space section of still sea above the wave, and as a thicker swirling line up into the wave from its base. Add in some black linework and blocks of colour in the sea around the upper area of the turtle.
Step 14
Kent Urban marker: Gold, White
Use gold to draw in outline of turtle, bringing some of the gold in toward the centre slightly to create more of shell rim. Draw in other shape and line work on the turtle's shell and body. While the gold is still wet, allow some of gold to bleed into the white as you fill in the rest of the turtle with white.
Step 15
Kent Urban marker: Black
Outline the squiggly seaweed and the silver and black wave shape in front of the turtle.
Step 16
Kent Urban marker: Silver, White
Add Silver curving lines and blocks of colour in the wave, and smaller marks in around some of the froth. Add white inner line to the silver block shape of water to the left of the turtle as shown.
Step 17
Kent Urban marker: Black
Make curving wave lines and thicker wave flow shapes inside the wave as shown.
Step 18
Kent Urban marker: Gold
Colour in the rest of the mountains with gold.
Step 19
Kent Urban marker: Gold, White
Outline the flower in gold and add lines fanning out from the centre of the flower into the petals. Fill in the rest of the petals using white and allowing some of the gold to bleed into it as seen.
Step 20
Kent Urban marker: Black, Silver
Draw in exterior part of the centre of the flower using black. Add some silver in the very centre of the flower.
Step 21
Kent Urban marker: Black, Gold
Colour in the palm fronds black. Outline and draw the centre line of the palm frond on the left in gold. Roughly colour in over most of the inner section of the second palm frond using gold as seen. Add some gold lines curving over to form the top of the wave and some in the centre of the wave as shown.
Step 22
Kent Urban marker: Black
Fill in the wave with some additional black, darken any other areas of black already on board by adding another coat, add any more black as desired to mountains and draw the turtle's eyes.
Step 23
Kent Urban marker: Silver
Colour in any areas of sky that haven't been filled in yet (for instance, between completed palm fronds).
