FELT ELF HATS
Level: Beginner
What You'll Need:
- Spotted Hat:
- 0.3m of 90cm wide Red Felt Fabric for hat body
- 0.2m of 90cm wide White Felt Fabric for straight cuff
- Scraps of Green & White Felt Fabric for spots
- Candy Strip Hat:
- 0.3m of 90cm wide Red Felt Fabric for hat body
- 0.3m of 90cm wide Green Felt Fabric for pointed cuff
- 0.1m of 90cm wide White Felt Fabric for Stripes
- Sectioned Hat:
- 0.3m of 90cm wide Green Felt Fabric for hat body
- 0.3m of 90cm wide Red Felt Fabric for pointed cuff
- 0.1m of 90cm wide Red Felt Fabric for sections
- Gutermann Cotton Sewing threads in matching colours
- Sewing machine
- Scissors, Pins, Iron & pressing cloth, Tape measure/ruler, pencil
Instructions
Reference the downloadable project sheet for project pattern diagrams.
Step 1
From the templates provided, cut out:
Spotted Hat:
- 2x hat body pieces from red felt fabric
- 2x pieces of white felt measuring 16cm high by 24.5cm wide
- Felt circles:
- Green - 2x 26mm, 4x 38mm & 2x 45mm
- White - 2x 26mm, 2x 38mm & 4x 45mm
Candy Strip Hat:
- 2x hat body pieces from red felt fabric
- 2x pointed cuffs on the fold from green felt fabric
- 12x 2cm wide by 30cm long strips from white felt fabric
Sectioned Hat:
- 2x hat body pieces from green felt fabric
- 2x pointed cuffs on the fold from red felt fabric
- 2x of each of the 2 sections from red felt fabric
Step 2
Spotted Hat:
Pin felt circles to the outer side of the front and back hat body pieces as per template or as per desired.
Top stitch circles to secure to hat with matching threads.
Candy Strip Hat:
Pin white felt strips across the outer side of the front and back hat body pieces with a 2cm gap between each white stripe. Ensure stripes line up at the sides of each piece.
Top stitch strips to secure to hat with matching thread.
Sectioned Hat:
Pin felt sections to the outer side of the front and back hat body pieces as per template. Ensure sections line up at the sides of each piece.
Top stitch sections to secure to hat with matching thread.
Step 3
With outer sides facing, pin front and back of hat body together, aligning any outer decorations on the side edges. Sew together with an 8mm seam allowance, leaving the base edges open.
Clip curves. Turn hat right way out. Press flat with a pressing cloth.
Step 4
Straight Cuff:
With right sides racing, pin the two pieces of white felt together. Sew together at the shorter sides with an 8mm seam allowance.
Fold fabric into a cuff, with the wrong sides with seams to the inside, and pin and sew top raw edges together.
Pointed Cuff:
Layer the two pointed cuff fabric pieces together. Pin, then topstitch layers together 5mm in from all edges.
Bring the two shorter edges of the cuff together to make a loop. Pin, then sew with an 8mm seam allowance.
Step 5
Straight Cuff:
With hat right way out, place the cuff inside of the hat aligning the raw edges. Pin then sew cuff to hat with 1cm seam allowance.
Turn cuff to the outside of the hat.
Pointed Cuff:
With hat right way out, place the pointed cuff inside of the hat aligning the raw edges, with the right side of the cuff facing the wrong side of the inner hat.
Pin then sew cuff to hat with 1cm seam allowance.
Turn pointed cuff to the outside of the hat.
