Instructions
Reference the downloadable project sheet for project pattern diagrams.
Gumnut Child Skirt
- Cut elastic to fit the intended wearer, leaving extra length for the waistband join. Leave the elastic as a flat strip while attaching trims.
- Cut ribbons, trims and fabric strips into varying lengths. Arrange and layer them along the elastic, mixing colours, textures and widths.
- Stretch the elastic slightly and sew the ribbons and trims securely in place along the full length of the waistband. Add additional layers where desired to create fullness and texture.
- Overlap the elastic ends and stitch securely to form a loop.
- Trim any loose threads and adjust the ribbons and fabric strips to create an even, full skirt.
Gumnut Child Bonnet
- Fold the bonnet rectangle in half with right sides together so it measures approximately 9.5" x 10.5". Stitch the open 10.5" side to create the back seam. Turn right side out and press.
- Fold the ruffle strip in half lengthwise with wrong sides together and gather the raw edge until it matches the bonnet opening.
- Pin the ruffle around the face opening and stitch in place. Finish the seam with an overlocker or zigzag stitch.
- Fold the lower edge of the bonnet to create a casing. Stitch, leaving an opening to insert elastic.
- Thread elastic through the casing and secure the ends. Attach ribbon ties to each side of the bonnet and tie under the chin to wear.
Gumnut Leaf Necklace
Cutting
Using the leaf template, trace 6 leaf shapes.
- Cut fabric rectangles slightly larger than the leaf template. Fuse heavy weight interfacing between two layers of fabric to create a fabric sandwich.
- Trace the leaf template onto the fabric and stitch directly on the traced lines. Sew a centre vein down the middle of each leaf.
- Carefully cut out each leaf approximately 2-3mm outside the stitched outline.
- Cut two small vertical slits approximately 1cm apart near the top of each leaf. Thread ribbon through the slits, overlapping the leaves slightly and alternating colours as desired.
- Adjust the leaf placement and tie around the neck to wear.
