Instructions
Reference the downloadable project sheet for project pattern diagrams.
Step 1
Cut two pieces of fabric measuring 50cm x 50cm. Make sure to add 1.5cm seam allowance all around the edges. If you're using patterned fabric, make sure the pattern is aligned on your fabric pieces. For the zip panel, cut two panels, one left and one right, 50 x 6cm wide with 1.5cm seam allowance all around the edges. For the side and back panels, cut three 50 x 12cm pieces.
Step 2 - Prepare the zipper
Take the two zipper panels and, using a gathering stitch, sew a 1.5 cm seam along the 50 cm edge. Press the seam open with an iron. Next, place the zipper facing down along the centre of the seam allowance and pin both sides of the zipper in place. Using a zipper foot, stitch down each side of the zipper. Turn the fabric to the right side, then carefully use a seam ripper to cut open the centre seam, revealing the zipper.
Step 3 - Prepare the side panels
Take the top cushion panel and place it on top of the zipper and side panel, with the right sides facing together. Pin all the way around the edges, then sew a 1.5 cm seam around the entire cushion. Before sewing, make sure the zipper is slightly unzipped, as this will make it easier to turn the cushion cover right side out once it is complete.
Step 4 - Sew the corners
Pin the corners of the side panels together with the right sides facing. Sew a 1.5 cm seam allowance along each corner, then press the seams open with an iron to reduce bulk.
Step 5 - Sewing the top of the cover
Take the top piece of the cushion cover and pin it to the side panels, right sides together. Sew all the way around using a 1.5 cm seam allowance.
Step 6 - Inserting the cushion
Turn the cushion cover right side out through the zipper opening. Insert the foam or cushion through the opening, ensuring it fits neatly into the corners. Close the zipper to finish.
