What Types of Curtains Can I Hang on a Curtain Rod?
Most types of common curtains can be installed on curtain rods. The most common styles or header types used in conjunction with curtain poles are eyelet curtains, rod pocket curtains, tab top and concealed tab top curtains. These types can simply be threaded directly onto the pole or rod.
Pleated curtains, including pencil pleat curtains and pinch pleat curtains, can also be hung from curtain rods, using curtain hooks & rings to complete your installation!
How to Tell Curtain Rod Types Apart?
At Spotlight, you can shop from a range of different curtain rod types. The easiest way to tell these curtain rods apart is by looking at their function. Double curtain rods are the easiest to identify. These curtain rods, as their name suggests, feature a double design with two rods that make them perfect to use when installing a layered display of two pairs of curtains. Additionally, expandable curtain rods are also quite easy to identify by looking for a telescopic design where one pole slides inside another. You can also find conduit and tension rods available here at Spotlight. While conduit rods are thin, light and sturdy curtain rods, tension rods expand to fit inside a window recess, requiring no screws or nails to hold up.
Choosing the Best Curtain Rod for the Job
At Spotlight, you can shop from a range of different curtain rods to match your home decor style, but it may be challenging to choose the right curtain rods for your curtains. Check out when it's best to use the following types of curtain rods right here:
- Decorative curtain rods - These curtains are ideal for those wanting to complement their home styling when installing their curtains. These curtain rods add style and aesthetic charm to your window furnishings
- Expandable curtain rods - If you can't find a curtain rod that perfectly matches the length of your window, then an extendable one is the perfect choice, as you can adjust it to fit your space. Perfect for most rooms in your home, shop from a range of different colour tones that effortlessly complement various home decor styles.
- Double curtain rods - Enjoy the best of both worlds when it comes to displaying both sheer curtains and blockout curtains with a double rod set. These curtain rods are ideal for bedrooms where you can enjoy the light filtering properties of sheer curtains while resting amongst a dark and cosy room, thanks to blockout curtains.
- Tension rods - Ideal for rental homes, caravans or for a temporary solution to installing curtains that is easy to adjust and move around, these curtain rods are a great lightweight option for curtain rods.
- Conduit rods - Can be cut to size and offer a sturdy base suitable for most curtain types
What Size Curtain Rod Do You Need for Your Window?
The first step to determining the correct curtain pole size is to measure your window. Our handy guide to How to Measure Your Windows is a great starting point.
Once you know the width of your window, you can select the correct curtain rod length. At Spotlight, many of our curtain rod sets are expandable in size, meaning no cutting is required! Just ensure the width of your window falls between the minimum and maximum length of the pole.
The second consideration when it comes to curtain pole size is the diameter. Broadly speaking, the wider or heavier the curtain you're hanging, the wider the rod diameter is required to provide adequate support. Diameters of 22/25 mm or 25/28 mm are suited to heavier drapes like blockout curtains, whereas conduit rods of 16 mm are sufficient for shorter or narrower sheer curtains.
What Comes with a Curtain Rod Set?
At Spotlight, you can shop from a range of handy curtain rod sets which include a number of essentials you need to install your curtains, including a curtain rod, a set of brackets and fittings, as well as a pair of finials for both functionality and a decorative touch. You may need to shop for other tools and accessories such as screws, a screwdriver or a drill and a leveller, to ensure your curtain rods are even.
Can You Install Curtain Rods Yourself?
Installing curtains by yourself is a relatively simple process, especially for those with some handiwork experience. First shop Spotlight's range of curtain rods for one that is wider than your windows. Then mark where your brackets will be placed on your wall using a pencil. Drill some holes into your wall corresponding with your brackets and screw them into place. Finally, insert your curtain rod into your brackets and screw your brackets in place one last time to ensure they are secure.
If you're wanting to avoid drilling holes into your wall, a good idea is to shop for tension rods, which can be installed inside your window recess by simply expanding into position. Another good idea is to use self-adhesive hooks. Shop for heavy-duty hooks that are able to support the weight of curtain rods, and you'll have yourself an efficient no-drill solution.
When Should You Get a Curtain Track Instead of Rods?
When shopping for curtain rods or tracks, you should first consider the type of curtains you're displaying. Curtain rods work best for eyelet curtains, rod pocket curtains and tab top curtains as the headers of these curtains are all designed for a curtain rod to thread through. Spotlight's curtain tracks, on the other hand, are best for curtains that are designed to run on a track, such as s-fold curtains. Curtain tracks can also be motorised with our Made to Measure motorisation service, offering convenience in your window treatment. Other curtain types, such as pinch pleat or pencil pleat curtains, can be installed on both curtain tracks and curtain rods with the right accessories. Check out our buying guide on choosing curtain rods or tracks for more information.
Easy Hacks to Hang Your Curtains Right
When it comes to hanging your curtains, one of the most helpful tips is to first identify whether your curtains require a curtain rod or track. Installing a curtain rod or track too low is one of the few common mistakes people make when updating their window treatments. Always make sure your curtain rods or tracks are at an appropriate height before installing, as this ensures your curtains are hung correctly.
