RAFFIA CROCHET TOTE
Level: Beginner
What you'll need:
- Francheville Viscose Raffia 50g Balls:
- Mustard x 4
- Size 3.50mm, 4.50mm & 6mm crochet hooks
- 1 x Abbey Road Bagology 18cm Crochet Bag Base (Rectangle)
- 1 x Abbey Road Bagology 13cm Bamboo Bag Handle Set (Semi Circle)
- 1 x Abbey Road Bagology 25mm Press Lock Clasp (Gold)
- Size PH#0 Screwdriver
- 2 removable stitch markers of safety pins
- Yarn needle, scissors, tape measure

10sts x 14 rows in Crochet Waistcoat Stitch patt, using 6mm hook.
10sts x 5 rows in Half Treble patt using 6mm hook.
Instructions
Special Abbreviations / Stitches
WCS - Waistcoat Stitch (also called Crochet Knit-Look stitch) - it's worked the same as a double crochet stitch, but inserting the hook in the centre of the V-Shape through the front of a stitch rather than the V-Loops on top of a stitch.
Note: For help working the Crochet Waistcoat Stitch, search 'How To Crochet the Waistcoat Stitch'. Tote is worked in continuous rounds.
UK Crochet Terms.
Attaching Raffia to Tote Base
Using 3.50mm hook and C1, holding Raffia at back of Base, pull through a loop in hole at centre of long side of base (Centre Back of Tote), slst in each hole around Base, ending in first hole at beg.
1st Rnd - 1ch (counts as first st), insert hook in same holes on Base as before, just behind slsts, work *1dc in next hole, 2dc in next hole * rep around Base, until 2 holes rem, 1dc in next 2 holes ... 62sts.
Working in continuous rounds for remainder. Raffia tail end on Base, indicates Centre Back of Tote.
2nd Rnd - Using 4.5mm hook, work WCS to end of rnd.
3rd Rnd - Using 6mm hook, rep 2nd Rnd.
Optional - Attaching Studs to Tote Base
Mark 4 spots on Base and punch a hole. Insert studs and screw tightly.
Cont working in patt for another 16 rnds (19 rnds in total) finishing at Centre Back of Tote.
20th Rnd - 1htr in each WCS to end of rnd.
21st Rnd - 1htr in each st to end of rnd.
Cont in htr patt for another 6 rnds ending 2sts before Centre Back, 1dc in rem 2sts.
Next Rnd - 1dc in each st.
Next Rnd - slst in each st, ending at Centre Back, fasten off, leaving long end for attaching Clasp Strap.
Press Lock Clasp Strap
Using 6mm hook, make 24ch, slst at beg creating a loop, ensuring not to twist.
1st Rnd - 2ch (counts as one st), 1htr in each ch around ... 24sts, join with a slst at beg.
2nd & 3rd Rnd - rep 1st Rnd, fasten off leaving long end for sewing.
Inside Pocket (Optional)
Using 6mm hook make 21ch, turn
1st Row - 1dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1dc in each ch to end ... 20sts, turn.
2nd Row - 1ch, 1dc in each st to end ... 20sts.
Rep last row another 8 times more, turn ... 10 rows in total.
Next Row - 1ch, slst in each st to end, fasten off. Leaving long end for sewing.
Finishing
Mark Centre Back & Front of Tote using stitch markers or safety pins. Flatten Clasp Strap and oversew edges, doubling strap. Attach Press Lock to one end of strap following instructions on package. Attach Lock Clasp to Centre Front 5ch from top edge following instructions on package. Place Bamboo Handles on Front & Back of Tote, centred to closed strap, and fasten in place. Place 'handmade' label and sew in place. Sew Pocket to inside and Centre Back of Tote, just bordering onto first row of half treble pattern rnd, using oversew stitch. Sew in ends.
