Special Stitches

Dec: decrease - insert hook into specified st, yoh, pull loop through, insert hook into next st, yoh, pull loop through, yoh and pull through all 3 loops on hook.

Note: Hat is made of 6 motifs sewn together, then the crown and brim are worked from the sewn-together motifs.

Beg Motif (make 6)

Using 4mm hook, make a magic ring.

1st Rnd - 3ch (counts as tr throughout), 15tr in ring, slst into 3rd ch of 3ch at beg.

2nd Row - 1ch, 1dc in same st, 3ch, miss 1st, * 1dc in next st, 3ch, miss 1st, rep from * around, slst into dc at beg.

3rd Rnd - 5tr in next ch sp, * slst in next dc, 5tr in next ch sp, rep from * around, slst in same dc as slst at beg.

4th Rnd - Slst into next 3tr, 3ch, 1tr in same st, * 3ch, miss 5tr, 1dc in next tr, 3ch, miss 5tr, (2tr, 3ch, 2tr) in next tr, rep from * twice more, 3ch, miss 5tr, 1dc in next tr, 3ch, miss 5tr, 2tr in same tr as 2tr at beg, 1ch, 1htr in 3rd of 3ch at beg.

5th Rnd - 2ch (does not count as a st), 2htr in same sp, 1htr in each st and 3htr in each 3ch sp to next corner ch sp, * 5htr in corner sp, 1htr in each st and 3htr in each 3ch sp to next corner ch sp, rep from * around, 3htr in corner sp at beg, slst into htr at beg.

Note: The 3dc that make up the corners are worked in the 4th htr to account for the bias in the htr, 6th Rnd - 1ch, 2dc in same st, 1dc in each st to 4th of 5htr in next corner, * 3dc in 4th htr, 1dc in each st to 4th of 5htr in next corner, rep from * around, 1dc in same st as 2dc at beg, slst into dc at beg.

Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.

Joining Motifs

Using mattress st, sew the motifs together from corner dc to corner dc, in a ring.

Beg Crown

Join yarn to any dc next to sewn corner dc on one side of joined motifs, and using 4mm hook, 1st Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same st, * 1dc in each st to next sewn corner st, 1dc in seam, rep from * around, slst into dc at beg ... 108 sts.

2nd Rnd - 1ch, dec same and next st, 1dc in each of next 16sts, * dec next 2sts, 1dc in each of next 16sts, rep from * around, slst into dc at beg ... 102sts.

3rd Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same and next 7sts, dec next 2sts, * 1dc in each of next 15sts, dec next 2sts, rep from * to last 7sts, 1dc in each of last 7sts, slst into dc at beg ... 96sts.

4th Rnd - 1ch, dec same and next st, 1dc in each of next 10sts, * dec next 2sts, 1dc in each of next 10sts, rep From * around, slst into dc at beg ... 88sts.

5th Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same and next 5sts, dec next 2sts, * 1dc in each of next 9sts, dec next 2sts, rep from * to last 4sts, 1dc in each of last 4sts, slst into dc at beg ... 80sts.

6th Rnd - 1ch, dec same and next st, 1dc in each of next 8sts, * dec next 2sts, 1dc in each of next 8sts, rep From * around, slst into dc at beg ... 72sts.

7th Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same and next 4sts, dec next 2sts, * 1dc in each of next 7sts, dec next 2sts, rep from * to last 3sts, 1dc in each of last 3sts, slst into dc at beg ... 64sts.

8th Rnd - 1ch, dec same and next st, 1dc in each of next 6sts, * dec next 2sts, 1dc in each of next 6sts, rep From * around, slst into dc at beg ... 56sts.

9th Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same and next 3sts, dec next 2sts, * 1dc in each of next 5sts, dec next 2sts, rep from * to last 2sts, 1dc in each of last 2sts, slst into dc at beg ... 48sts.

10th Rnd - 1ch, dec same and next st, 1dc in each of next 4sts, * dec next 2sts, 1dc in each of next 4sts, rep From * around, slst into dc at beg ... 40sts.

11th Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same and next 2sts, dec next 2sts, * 1dc in each of next 3sts, dec next 2sts, rep from * to last st, 1dc in last st, slst into dc at beg ... 32sts.

12th Rnd - 1ch, dec same and next st, 1dc in each of next 2sts, * dec next 2sts, 1dc in each of next 2sts, rep From * around, slst into dc at beg ... 24sts.

13th Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same st, dec next 2sts, * 1dc in next st, dec next 2sts, rep from * to last st, 1dc in last st, slst into dc at beg ... 16sts.

14th Rnd - 1ch, dec same and next st, * dec next 2sts, rep From * around, slst into dc at beg ... 8sts.

Fasten off, leaving a tail to tighten centre of crown.

Beg Brim

Join yarn to any dc next to sewn corner dc on one side of joined motifs, and using 4mm hook, 1st Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same st, * 1dc in each st to next sewn corner st, 1dc in seam, rep from * around, slst into dc at beg ... 108 sts.

2nd Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same and next 7sts, 2dc in next st, * 1dc in each of next 8sts, 2dc in next st, rep from * around, slst into dc at beg ... 120sts.

3rd Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same and each st around, slst into dc at beg.

4th Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same and next 4sts, 2dc in next st, * 1dc in each of next 9sts, 2dc in next st, rep from * to last 4sts, 1dc in each of last 4sts, slst into dc at beg ... 132sts.

5th Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same and each st around, slst into dc at beg.

6th Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same and next 9sts, 2dc in next st, * 1dc in each of next 10sts, 2dc in next st, rep from * around, slst into dc at beg ... 144sts.

7th Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same and each st around, slst into dc at beg.

8th Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same and next 5sts, 2dc in next st, * 1dc in each of next 11sts, 2dc in next st, rep from * to last 5sts, 1dc in each of last 5sts, slst into dc at beg ... 132sts.

9th Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same and each st around, slst into dc at beg.

10th Rnd - 1ch, 1dc in same and next 11sts, 2dc in next st, * 1dc in each of next 12sts, 2dc in next st, rep from * around, slst into dc at beg ... 144sts.

11th - 15th Rnds - 1ch, 1dc in same and each st around, slst into dc at beg.

Fasten off.

Finishing

DO NOT PRESS. Using tail of yarn at crown, pass yarn needle through the top of each st in last rnd, pull tight and fasten off firmly. Sew in all ends.
