Half Knot and Square Knot (HK & SK)

Additional Abbreviations

WC - Working Cords, term given to cords to make knots.

FC - Filler Cords, term given to cords that knots are made around.

Note: If your vertical space warrants a shorter or longer size, steps 4-7 can be adjusted to suit. If longer, add some extra length to the cuts to suit.

Tip: Suspending the ring and working vertically will achieve the best result.

Cut lengths as follows:

WC - Col1, 4 x 5.5 metres

FC - Col2, 4 x 3 metres

Fringe - Col3, 104 x 30cms.

Top Wrap - Col3, 1 x 1 metre.

Step 1 - Fold each of the MC and FC in half and loop through the ring, alternating colours.

Step 2 - Using the 1 metre Col3 cord, tightly wrap around the top 3cms to hold the cords in place. Using the yarn needle, thread the ends through the inside to secure. Trim ends.

Step 3 - Manipulate the cords, in 4 groups as follows: WS - Col1, FC - Col2 x 2, WC - Col1.

Step 4 - Working only on First group, work HKs repeated for 16cms. (Work will naturally twist, as each twist forms, work from the other side, as the knot is the same from both sides).

Step 5 - Repeat Step 4 for remaining 3 groups.

Step 6 - Working with any group, leave a gap of 8cms, continue to work in HKs for a further 20cms.

Step 7 - Repeat Step 6 for remaining 3 groups.

Note: Steps 8-12 create the shape to hold the pot. These measurements are designed to hold a pot from 15-20cms in diameter, and 12-15 in height. If your pot varies in size, the measurements below can also be adjusted accordingly. You can use your pot as a guide when making the joining knots.

Step 8 (Joining Round) - Measure down 9cms and *work a SK joining the sets together by taking 2 cords from the side of each group, (FCs will become new WCs, and WCs will become FCs).

Step 9 - Repeat Step 8. 3 more times.

Step 10 - Measure down 8cms and repeat steps 8&9 from *.

Step 11 - Measure down 7cms and repeat steps 8&9 from *.

Step 12 - Work an OK with all cords to bring base together just below last row of SKs worked.

Step 13 (Fringing) - The Fringe is added to the 9cms gap on the first joining round. Fold a length of Col3 in half and place the loop over the right side of the 2 joining cords, Bring the loop under to the right side, and thread the tails through the loop, tighten. Repeat this step with 13 in each space. 8 sets in all.

Step 14 - Trim base cords to 20cms or desired length below the OK cord. Fray cords for a relaxed look. A brush can help in the process and a steam iron can help with kinks in the yarn to prevent retwisting.

Fray the fringe as above and trim to a uniform length.
