EASTER REVERSIBLE FABRIC BASKETS
Level: Beginner
What you'll need:
- Two fabrics: one for outer, one for inner
- Medium-weight fusible interfacing (for outer fabric)
- Fusible fleece (for inner fabric)
- Scissors
- Sewing pins
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
- Iron
Instructions
Cutting:
From each fabric, cut:
- 2 rectangles: 13 x 9" (basket sides)
- 1 rectangle: 2.5 x 15.5" (basket handle)
- On the 13 x 9" rectangles, cut a 2 x 2" square from each bottom corner.
Step 1 - Prepare Fabric
- On the outer fabric pieces, iron on medium-weight fusible interfacing.
- On the inner fabric pieces, iron on fusible fleece.
Step 2 - Assemble The Basket Body
- Place the outer rectangles right sides together and sew along the two short edges and the bottom.
- Repeat with the inner rectangles.
- Box the corners by folding each bottom corner so the side and bottom seams align, then sew across the corner to create a flat base.
Step 3 - Prepare the Handle
- Place the outer and inner handle pieces right sides together, sew along the long edge, and turn right side out.
- Topstitch along the two long edges of the handle.
- Pin the handle to the middle of each long side of the outer basket and baste or sew in place. Make sure to baste this to the "right side" of the fabric - at this stage, the handle will run along the bottom of the basket.
Step 4 - Construct Basket (Right Sides Together):
- Place the outer basket right side out inside the inner basket wrong side out.
- Line up the side seams and pin around the top edge.
- Sew around the top edge, leaving a 5-10 cm gap for turning.
Step 5 - Turn and Finish
- Carefully turn the basket right side out through the gap.
- Press neatly, tucking the inner basket inside the outer.
- Topstitch around the top edge, taking care to move the handle out of the way.
- Hand-stitch the turning gap closed if needed for a cleaner finish.
