Instructions

Preparation & Cutting

  1. From each of the 7 printed fabrics, cut 3, 3 1/2" strips
  2. From each of the 7 plain solid fabrics, cut 3, 3 1/2" strips
  3. From the binding fabric, cut 6, 2 1/2" strips
  4. Pair up your printed strips with the plain strips until you are happy with the combinations you have created.
  5. Take 2 printed strips and 1 plain solid strip and stitch together along the length of strip, placing the plain fabric in the middle of the 2 printed fabrics.
  6. Then take 2 plain fabrics and 1 printed fabric and stitch together as before with the printed fabric in the middle.
  7. Press seams open down length of strips.
  8. Crosscut all the strips into 6, 3 1/2" pieces from each.
  9. Lay out your pieces into a nine patch block and stitch together.
  10. You will create 2 blocks from each colourway, 1 with the printed fabric dominate and 1 with the plain solid fabric dominate.
  11. As there are 30 blocks in this quilt, use some of the remaining strips and cut some extra 3 1/2" pieces to create 2 extra blocks. You should have plenty of leftovers to do this. Or you could make up as many blocks as you wish and make the quilt bigger.
  12. Lay out all 30 blocks in a pleasing layout and begin to stitch the blocks together to create rows, then stitch the rows together, using pins to secure the seams as you go. Press all seams open, this will give a nice flat quilt top once it is finished.

Backing & Binding

  1. When you are ready to quilt your quilt, press the wide back fabric and sandwich the front and backing together with the wadding and pin your quilt thoroughly, using safety pins, then it's ready to machine quilt. Or, alternatively, you could take it to your local long-arm quilter to finish.
  2. When your quilt has been quilted, it's ready to put the binding on. Stitch all the binding lengths together to create one long length. Fold the strip in half, wrong sides together and press down the length of the binding. Stitch the binding to the front edge of the quilt using a 1/4" seam, mitring the corners as you go. Hand-stitch the binding to the back of your quilt.
  3. And don't forget to label and date your quilt!
