Instructions

Reference the downloadable project sheet for project pattern diagrams.

Note: Use a separate ball of yarn for each section of colour. Wind small amounts of colours onto yarn bobs (if required). When changing colours within a row, twist the colour to be used (on WS) underneath and to the right of the colour just used. Buckle done after knitting is finished using Swiss darning OR alternatively, change colours during knitting.

Note: Read odd numbered rows (RS) from right to left (knit st) and even numbered rows (WS) from left to right (purl st).

Instructions

Front

Using 4mm needles, cast on 79sts as follows - 9sts using C2, 61sts using C1, 9sts using C2.

Beg Diagram Section (see below) -

1st Row (RS) - K9 using C2, K61 using C1 (Diagram), K9 using C2.

2nd Row - P9 using C2, P61 using C1, P9 using C2.

Cont in stocking st, working from Diagram until all 106 rows have been completed, change to C1.

Back

Cont to work in stocking st until Back measures same as Front ending with a purl row.

Cast off loosely.

Arms (make 2, beg at Shoulder)

Using 4mm needles and C1, cast on 10 sts and work in stocking st stripes of (6 rows C1 and 2 rows C3) twice, then 2 rows C1.

Next Row - Using C3 for rem, K1, * M1, K3, rep from * to end ... 13sts.

Next Row - Purl.

Next Row - Knit.

Rep last 2 rows once more.

6th Row - P1, * P2tog, P1, rep from * to end ... 9 sts.

7th Row - Knit.

8th Row - * P1, P2tog, rep from * to end ... 6 sts.

9th Row - Knit.

Break off yarn leaving a long end. Run end through rem sts, draw up tightly and fasten off securely.

Nose

Using C3 HELD DOUBLE and 4mm needles, cast on 10sts.

Work 12 rows stocking st.

Break off yarn leaving a long end. Run end through rem sts. Cont to run end through selvage sts, cast-on sts and other side selvage sts, draw up slightly, leaving an opening for stuffing.

Finishing

DO NOT PRESS. Using C2, wind over cardboard and cut at one end, making 92strands. Using 4 strands of yarn (folded to create 8 strands), attach fringe on centre 23sts as per diagram. Using C1 left over yarn, stuff nose, pull thread tight and secure ends firmly. Place Nose on beard fringe and sew in place securely. Using left over yarn, stuff arms slightly and sew in place. Using C3 and Swiss darning, embroider Belt Buckle as per diagram. Using mattress st, join Back and Front tog at side edges. Place cushion insert inside OR stuff using Hobby Fill. Using mattress st, join Front and Back at cast-on / cast-off edges. Using length of C2 and yarn needle, make a tuck stitch through both layers at beard level to give Santa some depth. Make a medium size pom pom using C1 and sew to tip of Santa on Front as pictured. Trim beard to size. Sew in ends.
