Templates
2 templates are required to make the trees. Draw the triangles onto paper then transfer to template plastic or card.
Triangle 1 - Base 4 3/4" and sides 5 3/8".
Triangle 2 - Base 2 5/8", vertical side 5 1/2", angled side 5 3/4".
Cutting
All strips are cut across the width of fabric unless otherwise stated.
- From each of Fabrics A, B, C, D, E, F, G & H cut 1 x 7 1/2" strip, 1 x 2 1/2" strip and 2 x 1 1/2" strips.
- From Fabric I cut 1 x 2 1/2" strip and crosscut into 24 x 1 1/2" rectangles for tree trunks. Cut 4 x 2 1/2" strips for binding.
Cutting Using Templates
Step 1 -Place Template 1 on the 7 1/2" strip of Fabric A, trace around the edge using the Frixion pen and cut out the triangle. Repeat for a second triangle.
Step 2 - Place Template 2 on the 7 1/2" strip of Fabric A, trace around the edge using the Frixion pen then flip the Template over and trace around the edge to make a mirror image. Cut out both triangles to make one set. Repeat to make another set.
Step 3 - Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for Fabrics B, C, D, E, F, G & H. Keep your triangles in Fabric groups as it will be easier to mix and match when constructing your blocks.
Trees
Step 4 - Select a Triangle 1 from Fabric A and a Triangle 2 set from Fabric B. Place the long side of Triangle 2 along the right-hand side of Triangle 1 with right sides facing and pin as shown below. Stitch together. Open out and press seam towards Triangle 2. Place the matching Triangle 2 along the other side, pin and stitch pressing seam towards Triangle 2. Trim top and bottom edges to create a 4 1/2" square.
Blocks
Step 5 - From 2 1/2" Fabric B strips cut 2 x 2" widths. Sew to each side of a 2 1/2" x 1 1/2" Fabric I rectangle. Press seams in one direction and sew strip to bottom edge of Step 4.
Step 6 - From 1 1/2" Fabric B strip cut 2 x 6 1/2" lengths and sew to each side of the block pressing seams towards the strip. Cut 2 x 8 1/2" lengths and sew to top and bottom edges of the block pressing seams towards the strip.
Step 7 - Repeat Steps 4 - 6 selecting two different fabrics for each block to make a total of 16 blocks.
Quilt top
Step 8 - Lay out the blocks in 4 rows with 4 blocks in each row as desired.
Step 9 - Sew blocks together in rows, matching seams and pressing seams in one direction alternating the direction in each row.
Step 10 - Sew the rows together matching seams. Press seams in one direction.
Step 11 - Layer the backing, batting and quilt top and baste together. Quilt as desired.
Step 12 - Join the 4 x 2 1/2" Fabric I binding strips on the bias to make one long strip. Press in half lengthwise and bind mitering corners. Attach a label or sign and date your quilt. If desired attach a rod pocket or loops for hanging.
