Jayne Branchflower Quilt As You Go Cushion

Instructions

Jayne Branchflower Quilt

  1. Cut 48 x 19cm (7 1/2 in) squares.
  2. Sew squares together, 6 squares to a row, alternating the fabric. Press seams open.
  3. Sew all rows together, alternating so that no 2 designs are together. You will have a quilt top of 6 square blocks by 8 square blocks. Press seams open.
  4. Lay backing fabric on table, smooth wadding on top of backing. Use quilt basting spray to hold layers together. Lay quilt top and centre so that there is approximately 5cm excess around edges. Again, spray basting spray so all layers are held together.
  5. Quilt using a walking foot in rows, 6mm (1/4 in) from seam lines vertically and horizontally.
  6. Trim backing and wadding to edge of quilt.
  7. Using remainder of backing fabric, cut binding strips 5cm (2 1/2 in) wide and iron in half lengthwise. Pin these long, folded strips along all sides of the quilt. Sew through all thicknesses and mitring at corners. Fold binding over to back of quilt so that folded edge sits past the stitching line. Pin or use quilting clips. Either hand sew binding in place on the back of quilt or 'ditch stitch' from the front of the quilt making sure the binding is caught at the back.

Jayne Branchflower Quilt As You Go Cushion

  1. Cut strips of Jayne Branchflower fabric 5cm (2 1/2 in). We used different lengths of fabric and alternated them in strips.
  2. Sew cut strips together making a 50 cm length for each row.
  3. Place the 50cm x 50cm scrap of plain fabric right side down then the 50cm x 50cm wadding on top.
  4. Starting in the centre of the cushion panel place 1 row right side up. Baste or if you prefer you can sew a couple of rows of straight stitching (decorative quilting stitching). Place the second-row right sides together.
  5. Sew using a 6mm (1/4 in) seam through all thicknesses.
  6. Press these rows open.
  7. Place the next piece right sides together with the first section, lining up the edge of the fabric to the straight edge that you want to join. Stitch a 6mm (1/4 in) seam along that edge.
  8. Open out and press. Continue until you have finished all rows.
  9. Trim using a quilt ruler and rotary cutter so that the finished cushion front measures 47cm x 47cm (18 1/2 in x 18 1/2 in) and all edges a straight and neat.
  10. Place cushion backing fabric, (that has been trimmed to same size as cushion front) right sides together. Pin or clip together then sew around all edges but leaving a 25cm opening along the bottom edge.
  11. Turn right side out and press again. Insert cushion insert in through bottom opening then hand stitch opening closed.
