What is denim fabric, and how is denim made?

Denim has a long history dating back to the 17th century. Originally from Nîmes, France, the name serge de Nîmes eventually became "denim", and was a sturdy, indigo-dyed fabric prized by sailors for its durability, strength and practicality. Denim is traditionally made with cotton fibres woven with a twill weave construction, giving it the distinctive diagonal ribbing pattern that differentiates it from cotton canvas and duck.

What is Tencel?

TENCEL® is in fact a brand name for a fibre which is also called lyocell, manufactured by the Lenzing AG company. It is obtained from eucalyptus trees that are grown on farms using sustainable farming practices. Tencel fibres are spun into yarns which are woven into textiles that are soft, absorbent, very strong when wet or dry, resistant to wrinkles and drape well. Tencel is often blended with natural fabrics such as hemp, cotton and wool.

What is ring spun denim?

Ring-spun denim fabric is also known as ring-ring or dual-ring spun denim. The "ring spun" name comes from the type of yarn used in certain denim constructions and is a yarn produced by rolling rather than pressing the fibres into shape. This produces a characteristic uneven look which is prized for its texture and is considered to be a more authentic denim production method.
