Can I purchase toy patterns at Spotlight?

Yes, you can. Here at Spotlight, you will find a range of toy patterns to make stuffed animals, teddies, colourful cushions and other items for kids to play with. Let your imagination run wild by using different fabrics and embellishments and make unique toys and play-items that your children or grandchildren will treasure, at a fraction of the cost of buying them in the shops.

What is included in the range of toy patterns?

Most of the patterns sold here at Spotlight cover more than one design, so with one pattern you can make three or four different animals or teddies, or a family of robots or hand puppets. There is also a pattern for a lovely elephant with a range of clothes and its own carry case, or you could try your hand at a gorgeous tepee with play mat.

What should I consider when sewing toys?

Always keep in mind that you don't know who will get their hands on your finished toy, so keep safety in the forefront of your mind. Here are some handy tips:

Fabric: Make sure you use strong fabric that will hold its shape and can cope with being put in the washing machine if needed. Cotton, polyester and other fabrics with a close weave are best. If you use faux fur, make sure that it can be washed or give it a trial wash before you start sewing.

Stuffing: Buy child-safe stuffing. You can buy toy stuffing from Spotlight, in the craft section. Polyester stuffing is usually more practical than pellets, which can make a big mess if they escape from a toy or play-item!

Eyes: Again, safety is important when using eyes. Consider making eyes from pieces of felt or embroidering them onto your soft toy for small kids to play with. If you do want to use plastic eyes, make sure you buy safety eyes (the ones with the security washer on the back that stops kids from pulling them loose)

Embellishments: Buttons, sequins and other embellishments may look nice, but make sure they are not able to scratch or hurt small children.

Stitching:Always use a small stitch, and consider going over your seams twice, so the pressure, once your toy is stuffed, will not cause seams to rip.

How will I know what I need to make the toys?

Check the information provided on the back of the toy pattern (see individual product pages). This will not only tell you the amount of fabric you need, but also what else you need in the way of materials to complete your sewing project.

Does Spotlight sell other sewing patterns too?

Yes, you will find a huge range of patterns here including those for baby, toddler and child clothing, fancy dress costumes, adults clothing patterns including petite and plus sizes, and a variety of other patterns for leisure and sportswear, formal wear and much more.
