How do I tie-dye fabric?
There are lots of different ways to tie dye fabric, and basically impossible to get it wrong! We definitely recommend using natural products such as cotton or silk, as synthetics ones including polyester and nylon do not absorb the dye in the same way. Always prepare your fabrics, and cover your surfaces, clothes and hands as tie-dyeing can be a messy process. Prepare your die, and then bind sections of your t-shirt with rubber bands.
You can literally just take parts anywhere you like, or create a more regulated pattern by tying it up in a line. After you have prepared your fabric and dye, wet your fabric thoroughly, wring out any excess water, and then place it into your dye bath. The longer that you leave it soaking in here, the darker the colour will be, between 10 and 30 minutes should suffice, and we recommend that you stir it regularly using a long spoon or stick. Remove your fabric and rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear. Hang your fabric or leave to dry flat.
Is there anything else I need to remember?
We would like to remind customers always to read the manufacturers care instructions that come with your product thoroughly before you begin. Always wear gloves and cover any surfaces that may get dye on them as it will permanently stain. Finally, ensure that you dye your fabrics in a well-ventilated room and that your fabric dyes are stored in a cool, dry place that is out of the reach of children.
