Can I purchase velvet fabrics at Spotlight?

Yes, you can! Spotlight stock a large collection of beautifully soft velvet fabrics in a wide range of colours and styles, including Panne velvet, double velvet and velveteen. This fabric is ideal for making a variety of items including clothing, costumes, cushions and other soft furnishing items, and more.

What is velvet?

Velvet is a distinctive soft pile fabric that has been woven since at least the Middle Ages. The term velvet actually refers to the weave, and not the content of the material: velvet can be made from any type of fibre. Traditionally it was always made from silk, but these days, cotton and synthetics are commonly used. Velvet is woven as a double cloth on a specialised loom. The cut ends of the pile form tufts on the surface of the fabric, so closely together that they form a very soft, plush surface texture across the entire face of the fabric. After cutting, velvet is sheared to ensure an even length all over the fabrics surface.

Is all velvet fabric the same?

No, there are various types of velvet and velvet-style fabrics, including for instance:

  • Crushed Velvet - this type of velvet can be produced by pressing the fabric down in different directions or mechanically twisting it while wet.
  • Panne Velvet - also a type of crushed velvet, produced by forcing the pile in a single direction by applying heavy pressure.
  • Nacre Velvet - velvet with an effect similar to shot silk, where the pile is woven in one or more colours and the base fabric in another, creating a changeable, iridescent effect.
  • Velveteen - this is a type of imitation velvet. It is normally made of cotton or a combination of cotton and silk. It has a pile that is short (never more than 3mm deep), and is closely set. Devore or Burnout Velvet - a velvet treated with a caustic solution to dissolve areas of the pile, creating a velvet pattern upon a sheer or lightweight base fabric.
  • Double Velvet - this is a fabric with a short and closely woven nap, using a double-cloth construction in which two shifts of fabric are woven with long threads joining them together. Very smooth to the touch, elegant and very luxurious.

What can velvet fabrics be used for?

Velvet is often used to create evening wear, such as skirts, tops, shawls, capes and dresses. It drapes well and is soft to the touch, but extended wear can flatten the pile, so it must be treated with care. Velvet can also be used in interior design projects including cushions and table runners, or to make accessories such as flowers, bows, bags or even hair scrunchies.

How should I care for velvet fabrics?

Velvet is a delicate fabric, so if possible, dry cleaning will be the safest option to launder your velvet garments. If you do want to wash them at home, make sure you do not overfill the machine, use a cool setting with only little detergent, and remove items promptly from the machine after the cycle has finished. Dry them either hanging or lying flat, and do not tumble dry or iron. If you are removing spots or stains from velvet, make sure you dab rather than rub, as rubbing can damage the fabric.
