TIE DYE FACE MASK

Tie Dye Face Mask Project

Level: Easy

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

  • 40cm of tightly woven cotton (30cm will be tie dyed)
  • Tie Dye Pack in colours of your choice
  • Cling Wrap
  • Sewing machine and matching thread
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • 2 x hair elastics
  • Hand sewing needle and thread
  • Iron and ironing board
  • Simplicity Daisy Braid Trim Yellow 22 mm x 1.2 m
  • Simplicity Yarn Pom Trim White 12.7 mm

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1 - Begin by tie dying your fabric. Cut off 30cm of your fabric and place elastic bands around the fabric to create your desired tie dye pattern.

Step 2 - Mix dye following the pack instructions and apply to the fabric. Do this on a clean, protected work surface. Wrap the fabric in cling wrap once finished and leave to set for 6 - 8 hours.

Step 3 - Once set, wash the fabric under water to rinse away any excess dye and allow fabric to dry before ironing.

Step 4 - Download template and cut out 2 pieces of fabric for each layer. The outer layers will be from your tie dyed fabric and the middle layer can be interfacing or another layer of the plain cotton. You should have 6 pieces in total once cut out.

Step 5 - Match the right sides of each piece together and sew along the curved edge with a 1cm seam allowance.

Step 6 - Snip into seam allowance of the curved seams and press open.

Step 7 - Pin the outer layers together with right sides facing in. Then add the middle layer to the outside and pin all 3 layers together. This will ensure the middle layer ends up on the inside once finished.

Step 8 - Sew around the top and bottom edges of mask with a 1cm seam allowance. Once complete, turn the mask right side out.

Step 9 - Pin your chosen trim onto the top and bottom edges of the mask. Stop the trim 1cm before the edges of the mask to allow for the seam allowance. Once pinned, top stitch in place with a 3mm seam allowance.

Step 10 - Fold under the seam allowance at each end of the mask and top stitch in place, again with a 3mm seam allowance.

Step 11 - Now fold back and pin a 1 cm seam at each end of the mask. Put the hair elastic inside this casing and sew in place. Repeat on other side to create your ear loops.

Step 12 - To finish, cut and hand sew the daisy trim onto mask to decorate. Your mask is now ready to wear!
