Quilted Fruit Toys Project

Level: Intermediate

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

  • Templates (or card and pencil to create your own)
  • Prima fat flats in the colour of choice
  • Sewing machine and matching threads
  • 5m of quilting batting
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Shamrock craft acrylic ring

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1 - Print out templates or create your own by drawing your desired shape onto card. If creating your own remember to add a 1cm seam allowance all the way round your pieces.

Step 2 - Trace pattern pieces off onto your Prima fabric and cut out. You will need 2 of each pattern piece.

Step 3 - Then cut out the same patterns from the wadding, again you will need 2 of each pattern.

Step 4 - Place fabric pieces with right sides together and add the wadding pieces on the outside, this will ensure the wadding is on the inside once turned right side out. Pin through all layers and sew together with a 1cm seam allowance. Leave a gap at the top of your fruit/vegetable for turning through.

Step 5 - Snip into the seam allowance along any curved edges. Then turn the fabric right side out.

Step 6 - Repeat steps 4 and 5 with top pieces for your fruit/veg and keep the piece open at the bottom edge to turn through.

Step 7 - Cut out the loop piece from your fabric. Fold in half, length ways with right sides facing in. Pin and sew along the raw edge with a 6mm seam allowance. Use a safety pin to turn the strap right side out.

Step 8 - Now join all your pieces together by folding the opening of the base part of your fruit/vegetable inside 1cm. Place the top part of you fruit/vegetable inside the opening along with 1 end of the strap made in step 7.

Step 9 - Pin through all the layers and top stitch together with a 3mm seam allowance. Then top stitch your desired pattern on top of your fruit and vegetables to finish.

Step 10 - Repeat steps 1 - 10 for each design. Once all designs are complete turn under the open end of each strap 1 cm and press. Loop strap around the acrylic ring and pin in place. Repeat with all toys and then carefully hand sew the straps down using a need and thread to secure the toys to the ring.
