CUTTING

Note: All strips are cut across the width of fabric (WOF) from selvage to selvage edge unless otherwise noted.

WOF= Width of Fabric,LOF = Length of Fabric

Fabric A (Studio E Watercolor - Fuchsia/Purple), cut:

  • (1) 3 1/2" x WOF (8.89cm x WOF) strip, sub-cut (2) 3 1/2" x 6 1/2" (8.89cm x 16.51cm) strips and (4) 3 1/4"(8.26cm) squares.

Fabric B (Studio E Watercolor - Purple/Blue), cut:

  • (1) 1 1/2" x WOF (3.81cm x WOF) strip, sub-cut (2) 1 1/2" x 20" (3.81cm x 50.8cm) strips.
  • (1) 1 1/2" x 24" (3.81cm x 60.96cm) strip.
  • (1) 3 1/4" x WOF (8.26cm x WOF) strip, sub-cut (2) 3 1/4" x 6 1/2" (8.26cm x 16.51cm) strips and (2) 3 1/4" x 4" (8.26cm x 10.16cm) strips.

Fabric C (Studio E Aflutter & Fern - Purple), cut:

  • (4) 4 1/2" x WOF (11.43cm x WOF) strips. Sew the strips together end to end with diagonal seams and cut
    (2) 4 1/2" x 67 1/2" (11.43cm x 172cm) strips.
  • (3) 4 1/2" x WOF (11.43cm x WOF) strips. Sew the strips together end to end with diagonal seams and cut
    (2) 4 1/2" x 54 1/2" (11.43cm x 139cm) strips.
  • (1) 1 1/2" x WOF (3.81cm x WOF) strip, sub-cut (2) 1 1/2" x 20" (3.81cm x 50.8cm) strips.

Fabric E (Studio E Dewdrops Strands - Purple), cut:

  • (3) 1 1/4" x WOF (3.18cm x WOF) strips, sub-cut (5) 1 1/4" x 21" (3.18cm x 53.34cm) strips.
  • (4) 1 1/4" x WOF (3.18cm x WOF) strips.
  • (1) 3 1/2" x WOF (8.89cm x WOF) strip, sub-cut (2) 3 1/2" x 6 1/2" (8.89cm x 16.51cm) strips, (2) 3 1/4" x 8 3/4" (8.26cm x 22.23cm) strips and (2) 3 1/4" (8.26cm) squares.
  • (4) 3" x WOF (7.62cm x WOF) strips. Sew the strips together end to end with diagonal seams and cut
    (2) 3" x 60 1/2" (7.62cm x 154cm) strips.
  • (3) 3" x WOF (7.62cm x WOF) strips. Sew the strips together end to end with diagonal seams and cut
    (2) 3" x 44 1/2" (7.62cm x 114cm) strips.

Fabric F (Studio E Aflutter Tile - Purple), fussy cut:

  • (4) 6 1/2" (16.51cm) squares, each centered on a medallion.
  • (2) 3 1/4" x 4 3/4" (8.26cm x 12.07cm) strips from the remaining fabric.

Fabric G (Studio E Aflutter Blender - Purple), cut:

  • (1) 1 1/4" (3.18cm x WOF) strip, sub-cut (2) 1 1/4" x 21" (3.18cm x 53.34cm) strip.
  • (2) 1 1/4" x WOF (3.18cm x WOF) strips.
  • (1) 3 1/4" x WOF (8.26cm x WOF) strip, sub-cut (8) 3 1/4" (8.26cm) squares.
  • (7) 2 1/2" x WOF (6.35cm x WOF) strips for the binding.

Fabric H (Studio E Aflutter Blender - Green), cut:

  • (1) 1 1/2" x WOF (3.81cm x WOF) strip, sub-cut (1) 1 1/2" x 20" (3.81cm x 50.80cm) strip.
  • (1) 1 1/2" x WOF (3.81cm x WOF) strip sub-cut (1) 1 1/2" x 24" (3.81cm x 60.96cm) strip.
  • (1) 3 1/4" x WOF (8.26cm x WOF) strip, sub-cut (8) 3 1/4" (8.26cm) squares.
  • See instructions to cut (2) small butterfly bodies and (1) large butterfly body.

Fabric I (Shot Cottons - Carbon), cut:

  • (1) 3 1/4" x WOF (8.26cm x WOF) strip, sub-cut (36) 1" x 3 1/4" (2.54cm x 8.26cm) strips.
  • (1) 1" x WOF (2.54cm x WOF) strip, sub-cut (2) 1" x 11 3/4" (2.54cm x 29.85cm) strips.
  • (3) 1" x WOF (2.54cm x WOF) strips, sub-cut (14) 1" x 6 1/2" (2.54cm x 16.51cm) strips.
  • (3) 2" x WOF (5.08cm x WOF) strips. Sew the strips together end to end with diagonal seams and cut
    (2) 2" x 57 1/2" (5.08cm x 147cm) strips.
  • (2) 2" x 39 1/2" WOF (5.08cm x 101cm) strips.
  • (1) 1" x WOF (2.54cm x WOF) strip, sub-cut (2) 1" x 8" (2.54cm x 20.32cm) strips and (2) 1" x 7 1/4"
    (2.54cm x 18.42cm) strips.
  • (1) 1" x WOF (2.54cm x WOF) strip, sub-cut (2) 1" x 19 3/4" (2.54cm x 50.17cm) strips.
  • (1) 1" x WOF (2.54cm x WOF) strip, sub-cut (2) 1" x 15 1/4" (2.54cm x 38.74cm) strips.
  • (4) 1 1/2" x WOF (3.81cm x WOF) strips. Sew the strips together end to end with diagonal seams and cut
    (2) 1 1/2" x 65 1/2" (3.81cm x 167cm) strips.
  • (3) 1 1/2" x WOF (3.81cm x WOF) strips. Sew the strips together end to end with diagonal seams and cut
    (2) 1 1/2" x 46 1/2" (3.81cm x 119cm) strips.
  • (2) 1 1/2" x 42 1/2" (3.81cm x 108cm) strips, piece as needed.
  • (2) 2" x 24 1/2" (5.08cm x 62.23cm) WOF strips.
    Fabric J (Shot Cottons - Sky Blue), cut:
  • (1) 22 1/2" x 42 1/2" (57.15cm x 108cm) LOF strip.

Backing (Studio E Aflutter & Fern - Purple), cut:

  • (2) 62" x WOF ( 158cm x WOF) strips. Sew the strips together and trim to 62" x 83" (158cm x 211cm) for
    the back.

SEWING

Sew using a 1/4" seam allowance with right sides together (RST) unless otherwise indicated. Always
press towards the darker fabric while assembling, unless otherwise noted by the arrows.

Block Assembly

Step 1. Follow Figure 1 and sew together (1) 3 1/4" x 8" (8.26cm x 20.32cm) Fabric D strip, (4) 1" x 3 1/4"
(2.54cm x 8.26cm) Fabric I strips, (1) 3 1/4" (8.26cm) Fabric G square, (1) 3 1/4" (8.26cm) Fabric H square,
(1) 3 1/4" x 8" (8.26cm x 20.32cm) Fabric C strip and (1) 1" x 11 3/4" (2.54cm x 39.85cm) Fabric I strip to make
(1) Unit 1 block. Repeat to make a second Unit 1 block.

Step 2. Follow Figure 2 and sew together (2) 1" x 6 1/2" (2.54cm x 16.51cm) Fabric I strips, (1) 3 1/4" x 7 1/4"
(8.26cm x 18.42cm) Fabric D strip, (1) 1" x 7 1/4" (2.54cm x 18.42cm) Fabric I strip, (1) 3 1/4" (8.26cm)
Fabric E square, (1) 1" x 3 1/4" (2.54cm x 8.26cm)
Fabric I strip and (1) 3 1/4" x 4" (8.26cm x 10.16cm)
Fabric B strip to make (1) Unit 2 block. Repeat to make a second Unit 2 block.

Step 3. Follow Figure 3 and sew together (1) 1" x 6 1/2" (2.54cm x 16.51cm) Fabric I strip, (1) 3 1/4" x 8"
(8.26cm x 20.32cm) Fabric C strip, (1) 1 x 8" (2.54cm x 20.32cm) Fabric I strip, (1) 3 1/4" (8.26cm) Fabric G
square, (1) 1" x 3 1/4" (2.54cm x 8.26cm) Fabric I strip and (1) 3 1/4" x 4 3/4" (8.26cm x 12.07cm) Fabric F strip to make (1) Unit 3 block. Repeat to make a second Unit 3 block.

Step 4. Sew (1) Unit 1 block, (1) 6 1/2" (16.51cm) Fabric F square, (1) Unit 2 block, (1) 3 1/2" x 6 1/2" (8.89cm x 16.51cm) Fabric A strip and (1) Unit 3 block together, in that order, to make (1) Top/Bottom Border (Fig. 4). Repeat to make a second Top/Bottom Border.

Step 5. Follow Figure 5 and sew together (2) 1" x 6 1/2" (2.54cm x 16.51cm) Fabric I strips, (1) 3 1/4" x 8 3/4"
(8.26cm x 22.23cm) Fabric E strip, (4) 1" x 3 1/4" (2.54cm x 8.26cm) Fabric I strips, (1) 3 1/4" (8.26cm) Fabric G square, (1) 3 1/4" (8.26cm) Fabric A square, (1) 1" x 15 1/4" (2.54cm x 38.74cm) Fabric I strip, (1) 3 1/4"

Step 7. Sew (1) 1" x 6 1/2" (2.54cm x 16.51cm) Fabric I strip, (1) 6 1/2" (16.51cm) Fabric F square, (1) Unit 4 block, (1) 3 1/2" x 6 1/2" (8.89cm x 16.51cm) Fabric E strip and (1) Unit 5 block together in that order to make (1) Side Border (Fig. 7). Repeat to make a second Side Border.

Step 8. Sew (1) 1 1/4" x WOF (3.18cm x WOF) Fabric D strip, (1) 1 1/4" x WOF (3.18cm x WOF) Fabric E strip,
(1) 1 1/4" x WOF (3.18cm x WOF) Fabric G strip, (1) 1 1/4" x WOF (3.18cm x WOF) Fabric E strip, (1) 1 1/4" x WOF (3.18cm x WOF) Fabric D strip, (1) 1 1/4" x WOF (3.18cm x WOF) Fabric E strip, (1) 1 1/4" x WOF (3.18cm x WOF) Fabric G strip and (1) 1 1/4" x WOF (3.18cm x WOF) Fabric E strip together lengthwise and in that order to make (1) long DE strip set (Fig. 8). Refer to the manufacturer&rsquos instructions to add fusible web to the wrong side of the strip set. Cut (2) right small top wing segments and (2) left small top wing segments from the strip (Fig. 8).

Step 9. Sew (1) 1 1/2" x 24" (3.81cm x 60.96cm) Fabric B strip, (1) 1 1/2" x 24" (3.81cm x 60.96cm) Fabric C strip, (1) 1 1/2" x 24" (3.81cm x 60.96cm) Fabric H strip and (1) 1 1/2" x 24" (3.81cm x 60.96cm) Fabric C strip together lengthwise and in that order to make (1) BC strip set (Fig. 9). Refer to the manufacturer&rsquos instructions to add fusible web to the wrong side of the strip set. Cut (2) right small bottom wing segments and (2) left small bottom wing segments from the strip (Fig. 9).

Step 10. Sew (1) 1 1/4" x 21" (3.18cm x 53.34cm) Fabric D strip, (1) 1 1/4" x 21" (3.18cm x 53.34cm) Fabric E strip, (1) 1 1/4" x 21" (3.18cm x 53.34cm) Fabric G strip, (1) 1 1/4" x 21" (3.18cm x 53.34cm) Fabric E strip, (1)1 1/4" x 21" (3.18cm x 53.34cm) Fabric D strip, (1) 1 1/4" x 21" (3.18cm x 53.34cm) Fabric E strip, (1) 1 1/4" x 21"(3.18cm x 53.34cm) Fabric G strip, (1) 1 1/4" x 21" (3.18cm x 53.34cm) Fabric E strip, (1) 1 1/4" x 21" (3.18cm x 53.34cm) Fabric D strip and (1) 1 1/4" x 21" (3.18cm x 53.34cm) Fabric E strip together lengthwise and in that order to make (1) short DE strip set (Fig. 10). Refer to the manufacturer&rsquos instructions to add fusible web to the wrong side of the strip set. Cut (1) right large top wing segments and (1) left large top wing segments from the strip (Fig. 8).

Step 11. Sew (1) 1 1/2" x 20" (3.81cm x 50.8cm) Fabric B strip, Sew (1) 1 1/2" x 20" (3.81cm x 50.8cm) Fabric C strip, Sew (1) 1 1/2" x 20" (3.81cm x 50.8cm) Fabric H strip, Sew (1) 1 1/2" x 20" (3.81cm x 50.8cm) Fabric C strip and Sew (1) 1 1/2" x 20" (3.81cm x 50.8cm) Fabric B strip together lengthwise and in that order to make (1) BB strip set (Fig. 11). Refer to the manufacturer&rsquos instructions to add fusible web to the wrong side of the strip set. Cut (1) right large bottom wing segments and (1) left large bottom wing segments from the strip (Fig. 11).

Step 12. Refer to Figure 12 to arrange and press the butterfly wings and bodies onto the 22 1/2" x 42 1/2"
(57.15cm x 108cm) Fabric J strip.

Step 13. Finish the raw edges of each shape with a decorative stitch such as a buttonhole or satin stitch to make
the butterfly block.

Step 14. Sew (1) 1 1/2" x 42 1/2" (3.81cm x 108cm) Fabric I strip to each side of the butterfly block. Sew (1) 2" x 24 1/2" (5.08cm x 62.23cm) Fabric I strip to the top and to the bottom of the butterfly block to make the Center Block (Fig. 13).

Quilt Top Assembly

(Follow the Quilt Layout while assembling the quilt top.)

Step 15. Sew (1) Side Border to each side of the Center Block. Sew the Top/Bottom borders to the Center Block.

Step 16. Sew (1) 2" x 57 1/2" (5.08cm x 147cm) Fabric I strip to each side of the Center Block. Sew (1) 2" x 39 1/2" (5.08cm x 101cm) Fabric I strip to the top and to the bottom of the Center Block.

Step 17. Sew (1) 3" x 60 1/2" (7.62cm x 154cm) Fabric E strip to each side of the Center Block. Sew (1) 3" x 44 1/2" (7.62cm x 114cm) Fabric E strip to the top and to the bottom of the Center Block.

Step 18. Sew (1) 1 1/2" x 65 1/2" (3.81cm x 167cm) Fabric I strip to each side of the Center Block. Sew (1) 1 1/2" x 46 1/2" (3.81cm x 119cm) Fabric I strip to the top and to the bottom of the Center Block.
Step 19. Sew (1) 4 1/2" x 67 1/2" (11.43cm x 172cm) Fabric C strip to each side of the Center Block. Sew (1) 4 1/2" x 54 1/2" (11.43cm x 139cm) Fabric C strip to the top and to the bottom of the Center Block to make the quilt top.

Layering, Quilting and Finishing

Step 20. Press the quilt top and 62" x 83" (158cm x 211cm) backing well. Layer backing (wrong side up), batting, pressed quilt top (right side up) and baste. Quilt as desired and trim excess batting and backing when
quilting is complete.

Binding

Step 21. Cut the ends of the (7) Fabric G binding strips at a 45-degree angle and sew end to end to make (1)
continuous piece of binding. Fold in half lengthwise and press wrong sides together.

Step 22. Sew the binding to the front of the quilt, raw edges together. Turn the folded edge to the back, and hand stitch in place.
