STARRY NIGHT CAT PAINTING

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1 - Start by sketching the placement of the cat, the wind, the stars and sun. This is to help with visualising the final layout and allows you to change details easier.

Step 2 - Paint the silhouette of the cat in black. Let dry before moving onto the next step.

Step 3 - Moving onto the background, we started on the stars, the wind and sun. Using the colours Yellow and Pale Lemon, we mixed a swirl of the modelling paste for each colour. The medium will lighten the colour and slightly sheer it out, so we recommend going back and adding more paint if you want a stronger hue. A small brush will be better to use as the paint is very thick and the brush will pick up quite a lot.

Step 4 - Using a small round brush, paint layered short strokes in lengths of 1-2cm. You want to build up the layers to create the star. Start with Pale Lemon and then add another layer using Yellow. For the moon, we added a touch of Orange to Yellow to warm up the hue. Let dry for about 20 minutes before starting on the next step.

Step 5 - For the wind, we used Yellow, Pale Lemon, Cerulean Blue, Titanium White, Ultramarine Blue & Phthalo Blue. We lightened Cerulean Blue with Titanium White. Repeating step 3, we used the same process to mix the medium. We recommend having multiple brushes to change in-between colours easier. The medium can dry over time so remember to wash your brushes so it doesn't harden on the bristles. The key is painting in layers to add depth and colour. Let dry for a day if you've painted a thick layer otherwise 30-45 minutes will be sufficient for the layer to dry on the surface so it doesn't smudge.

Step 6 - For the sky, we used Ultramarine Blue, Phthalo Blue & Titanium White. Again, repeating step 3, mix in the medium and use the same method as previous steps. Let dry for a day.

Step 7 - We recommend going back in to finesse details or clean up smudges such as blending the strokes around the stars and sky or the cleaning up any marks on the black cat silhouette.

Step 8 - Let dry for a 1 day, now you've finished your special version of the Starry Night painting by Vincent Van Gogh!
