INSTRUCTIONS

HEAD

Using 3.25mm needles and MC, cast on 8 sts.1st row - Inc knitways once in each st ...16 sts.

2nd row - Purl.
3rd row - * K1, inc in next st, rep from * to end ...24 sts.
4th row - Purl.
5th row - * K2, inc in next st, rep from * to end ...32 sts. Work 3 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.
9th row - As 3rd row ...48 sts. Work 3 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.
13th row - * K2, inc in next st, rep from * to end ...64 sts. Work 3 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.
17th row - * K3, inc in next st, rep from * to end ...80 sts. Work 13 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.
Next row - * K3, K2tog, rep from * to end ...64 sts. Work 5 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row, marking the 24th and 41st sts for eye placement. Work 10 rows stocking st.
Next row - * K4, K2tog, rep from * to last 4 sts, K4 ...54 sts.
Work 15 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.
Next row - * K3, K2tog, rep from * to last 4 sts, K4 ...44 sts.
Work 5 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.
Next row - * K1, K2tog, rep from * to 2 sts, K2 ...30 sts. Work 1 row.
Next row - * K2tog, rep from * to end ...15 sts. Work 1 row.
Next row - * K2tog, rep from * to last st, K1 ...8 sts.

Break off yarn leaving a long end. Thread yarn through rem sts, draw up tightly and fasten off securely.

EARS (make 4 pieces)

Using 3.25mm needles and MC, cast on 19 sts.

1st row - Knit.
2nd row - Purl.
3rd row - Sl 1, K1, psso, knit to last 2 sts, K2tog.
4th row - Purl. Rep last 2 rows until 5 sts rem.
Break off yarn leaving a long end. Thread yarn through rem sts, draw up tightly and fasten off securely.

HORN

Using 3.25mm needles and C6, cast on 26 sts. Work 4 rows stocking st.

5th row - K1, K2tog, (K6, K2tog) twice, K7 ...23 sts. Work 3 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.
9th row - K1, K2tog, (K5, K2tog) twice, K6 ...20 sts. Work 3 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.
13th row - K1, K2tog, (K4, K2tog) twice, K5 ...17 sts. Work 3 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.
17th row - K1, K2tog, (K3, K2tog) twice, K4 ...14 sts. Work 3 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.
21st row - K1, K2tog, (K2, K2tog) twice, K3 ...11 sts. Work 3 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.
25th row - K1, K2tog, (K1, K2tog) twice, K2 ...8 sts. Work 3 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.
29th row - K1, (K2tog) 3 times, K1 ...5 sts.

Hoof - Using 3.25mm needles and C1, cast on 8 sts.
1st row - Inc knitways once in each st ...16 sts.
2nd and foll alt rows - Knit.
3rd row - * K1, inc in next st, rep from * to end ...24 sts.
5th row - * K2, inc in next st, rep from * to end ...32 sts.
7th row - * K3, inc in next st, rep from * to end ...40 sts. Knit 5 rows. Break off C1. Work in stocking st stripes of 6 rows C4 and 6 rows C5 for rem. Beg leg - Work 8 rows stocking st.
Next row - * K3, K2tog, rep from * to end ...32 sts. Work 23 rows stripes.
Next row - * K3, inc in next st, rep from * to end ...40 sts. Work 17 rows stripes.
Next row - * K3, K2tog, rep from * to end ...32 sts. Work 1 row.
Next row - * K2, K2tog, rep from * to end ...24 sts. Work 1 row.
Next row - * K1, K2tog, rep from * to end ...16 sts. Work 1 row.
Next row - * K2tog, rep from * to end ...8 sts.

Break off yarn leaving a long end. Thread yarn through rem sts, draw up tightly and fasten off securely.

FINISHING

Unless otherwise stated, we recommend using mattress st seam for joining all seams. Attach safety eye where marked. Join Head seam, gathering the 8 sts at cast on and leaving an opening for filling. Fill head molding into shape carefully.

With WS together, place 2 Ear pieces together and over sew around outside edges. Fold Ear in half and catch together at bottom. Mark position on Head and sew to Head. Repeat for other Ear.
Join seam of Horn (leaving the long end for winding around Horn). Fill firmly and attach to Head between the Ears. Using the long end, wind around the horn fairly tightly and secure at bottom of Horn.

Join Body seam, leaving an opening for filling. Fill Body molding into shape carefully. Attach Head to Body. Join Front and Back Leg seams, gathering the 8 sts at cast on, leaving an opening for filling. Fill Legs molding into shape carefully. Sew Front and Back Legs in position securely by sewing through top of limb then through body then through other limb.

Mane - Using C2, C3, C4, C5 and C6 together cut several lengths approx 15 cm long. Using a crochet hook, attach strands in pairs to top of Head between Ears working down back of Head. Trim to neaten.

Tail - Using C2, C3, C4, C5 and C6 together, cut several lengths approx 15 cm long to make a thick tassel for Tail. Sew securely in position at back of Unicorn, checking tail position does not impede the ability to sit before securing. Trim to neaten.

Using black embroidery thread and straight sts, embroider eye lashes. Using C3 and straight sts, embroider nostrils.
