WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • A 3.50mm crochet hook or size required for correct tension.
  • Scissors, yarn needle, tape measure

TENSION

1 flower = 9.5cm in diameter, using 3.50mm hook.

INSTRUCTIONS

NOTES -

1. Five separate Strips are worked, then crocheted tog to make the Afghan.
2. The yarn colour is changed to make stripes. To change yarn colour, work last st of old colour to last yarn over. Yarn over with new colour and draw through all loops on hook to complete st. Proceed with new colour. To reduce the number of ends to sew in later, cut and fasten off old colour only when instructed.
3. When instructed to "change to dropped loop" return the dropped loop to hook and adjust size of loop to reach to level of current row. Draw dropped loop through all loops on hook to complete last st of old colour and proceed with new colour.

STRIPS 1 AND 5

Note: These 2 Strips are made exactly the same.

Using 5mm hook and A, make 26ch.

1st row (RS) - Using A, dc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to end ... you will have 25dc in this row.

2nd row - Using A, 3ch (counts as tr), turn, sk first st, tr in each st to end.

3rd row - Using A, 1ch, turn, dc in first st, * 1ch, sk next st, dc in next st rep from * to end, working last dc in top of beg ch ... 13 dc and 12 1ch sps.

4th row - Using A, 3ch (counts as tr), turn, sk first st, tr in each 1ch sp and dc to end ... 25tr.

5th - 14th rows - Using A, rep 3rd and 4th rows five more times and change to E in last st of 14th row. Drop A, but do not cut.

15th row (RS) - Using E, rep 3rd row. Remove loop of E from hook. Elongate loop or place loop on a safety pin, so that it does not unravel.

16th row (RS) - With RS facing, pick up dropped end of A and draw up a loop in first st of previous row, 3ch (counts as tr), tr in next 1ch sp and in each dc and 1ch sp to end and change to dropped loop of E in last st. Fasten off A.

17th row (WS) - Using E, rep 3rd row and change to B in last st. Drop E, but do not cut.

18th row (RS) - Using B, rep 4th row. Remove loop of B from hook. Elongate loop or place loop on a safety pin, so that it does not unravel.

19th row (RS) - With RS facing, pick up dropped strand of E and draw up a loop in top of beg ch of previous row, 1ch, dc in same st, * 1ch, sk next st, dc in next st, rep from * to end, working last dc in top of beg ch and changing to dropped loop of B. Fasten off E.

20th row -Using B, rep 4th row.

21st - 32nd rows - Using B, rep 3rd to 14th rows and change to E in last st of 32nd row. Drop B, but do not cut.

33rd - 50th rows - Rep 15th to 32nd rows, working 33rd row with E, 34th row with B, 35th row with E, 36th row with C, 37th row with E, and 38th to 50th rows with C. Change to E in last st of 50th row. Drop C, but do not cut.

51st -68th rows - Rep 15th to 32nd rows, working 51st row with E, 52nd row with C, 53rd row with E, 54th row with D, 55th row with E, and 56th to 68th rows with D. Change to E in last st of 68th row. Drop D, but do not cut.

69th - 86th rows - Rep 15th to 32nd rows, working 69th with E, 70th row with D, 71st row with E, 72nd row with C, 73rd row with E, and 74th to 86th rows with C. Do not change yarn color in last st of 86th row.

87th row - Using C, 1ch, turn, dc in each st to end.Fasten off.

STRIP 2

Make same as Strip 1, working foundation ch and 1st to 14th rows with B, 15th row with E, 16th row with B, 17th row with E, 18th row with A, 19th row with E, 20th to 32 rows with A, 33rd row with E, 34th row with A, 35th row with E, 36th row with B, 37th row with E, 38th to 50th rows with B, 51st row with E, 52nd row with B, 53rd row with E, 54th row with C, 55th row with E, 56th row to 68th rows with C, 69th row with E, 70th row with C, 71st row with E, 72nd row with D, 73rd row with E, and 74th to 87th rows with D.

STRIP 3

Make same as Strip 1, working foundation ch and 1st to 71st rows with same colours as in Strip 1, do not change yarn colour in last st of 71st row.

72nd row - Using E, rep 4th row of Strip 1.

73rd and 74th rows - Using E, rep 3rd and 4th rows of Strip 1.

75th row - Using E, rep 3rd row of Strip 1 and change to A in last st. Drop E, but do not cut.

76th row - Using A, rep 4th row of Strip 1. Remove loop of A from hook. Elongate loop or place loop on a safety pin, so that it does not unravel.

77th row (RS) - Using dropped end of E, rep 19th row of Strip 1. Change to dropped loop A in last st. Fasten off E.

78th row - Using A, rep 4th row of Strip 1.

79th - 86th rows - Using A, rep 3rd and 4th rows of Strip 1 four more times.

87th row - Using A, 1ch, turn, dc in each st to end.

Fasten off.

STRIP 4

Using 5mm hook and B, make 26ch.

1st row (RS) - Using B, dc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to end - you will have 25 dc in this row.

2nd row - Using B, ch 3 (counts as dc), turn, sk first st, dc in each st across.

3rd row - Using B, 1ch, turn, dc in first st, * 1ch, sk next st, dc in next st rep from * to end ... 13 dc and 12 1ch sps.

4th row - Using B, 3ch (counts as tr), turn, sk first st, tr in each dc and 1ch sp to end ... 25 tr.

5th - 10th rows - Using B, rep 3rd and 4th rows three more times and change to E in last st of 10th row. Drop B, but do not cut.

11th row (RS) - Using E, rep 3rd row. Remove loop of E from hook. Elongate loop or place loop on a safety pin, so that it does not unravel.

12th row (RS) - With RS facing, pick up dropped strand of B and draw up a loop in first st of previous row, 3ch (counts as tr), tr in next st and in each st to end and change to dropped loop of E in last st. Fasten off B.

13th and 14th rows -Using E, rep 3rd and 4th rows.

15th and 16th rows - Using E, rep 3rd and 4th rows.

17th row (WS) - Using E, rep 3rd row and change to B in last st. Drop E, but do not cut.

18th row (RS) - Using B, rep 4th row. Remove loop of B from hook. Elongate loop or place loop on a safety pin, so that it does not unravel.

19th row (RS) - With RS facing, pick up dropped strand of E and draw up a loop in top of beg ch of previous row, 1ch, dc in same st, * 1ch, sk next st, dc in next st rep from * to end and change to dropped loop of B in last st. Fasten off E.

20th row - Using B, rep 4th row.

21st - 32 rows - Using B, rep 3rd to 14th rows and change to E in last st of 32nd row. Drop B, but do not cut. Cont to drop, change, and fasten off colours as before, to reduce number of yarn ends to sew in later.

33rd -50th rows - Rep 15th to 32nd rows, working 33rd row with E, 34th row with B, 35th row with E, 36th row with C, 37th row with E, and 38th to 50th rows with C. Change to E in last st of 50th row.

51st - 53rd rows - Rep 15th to 17th rows working 51st row with E, 52nd row with C, and 53rd row with E. Do not change colour.

54th row - Using E, rep 4th row.

55th and 56th rows - Using E, rep 3rd and 4th rows.

57th row - Using E, rep 3rd row and change to D in last st of 57th row. Drop E, but do not cut.

58th row (RS) - Using D, rep 4th row. Remove loop of D from hook. Elongate loop or place loop on a safety pin, so that it does not unravel.

59th row (RS) - With RS facing, pick up dropped strand of E and draw up a loop in top of beg ch of previous row, 1ch, dc in same st, * 1ch, sk next st, dc in next st rep from * to end and change to dropped loop of D in last st. Fasten off E.

60th row - Using D, rep 4th row.

61st - 68th rows - Using D, rep 3rd and 4th rows four times.

69th -86th rows -Rep 15th to 32nd rows, working 69th row with E, 70th row with D, 71st row with E, 72nd row with D, 73rd row with E, and 74th to 86th rows with D. Do not change yarn color in last st of 86th row.

87th row (RS) - Using D, 1ch, turn, dc in each st to end. Fasten off.

FINISHING

DO NOT PRESS. Lay Strips on a flat surface, with ends of rows matching, in the following order: 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

Join 2 Strips

With RS facing, working vertical seam between 2 Strips and working through both thicknesses, join E with dc in lower corner, * 1ch, sk a distance that is about equal to the width of one st, dc in edge rep from * to end, matching E-colored rows whenever possible. Fasten off. Rep to join remaining Strips.

Border

With RS facing, join E with sl st anywhere along outside edge of Afghan, 1ch 1, crab st in edge, * 1ch, sk a distance that is about equal to the width of one st, crab st in edge of Afghan rep from * around, 1ch join with sl st in beg 1ch. Fasten off. Sew in ends.
