Quilted Christmas Runner & Placemats Project

Table Runner

What you'll need:

  • Fabric 1: X20 Scandi Tree Flk - Natural/Red - 105 x 35cm
  • Fabric 2: X20 Scandi Mini Str - Red - 30cm
  • Fabric 3: X20 Scandi Merry - Red - 20cm
  • Fabric 4: X20 Xmas Ornaments RK - Green - 15cm
  • Fabric 5: X20 Xmas Splndr RK - Cream - 15cm
  • Backing fabric - 105 x 35cm
  • Cotton wadding - 105 x 35cm
  • Heat n Bond - 1m
  • Walking foot

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Lay backing face down on table, smooth wadding on top of backing then smooth Fabric 1 (Scandi Tree Flk) right side up on top of wadding.
  2. Cut binding strips 7.5cm wide from Fabric 2 (Scandi Mini Str) and iron in half lengthwise. Pin these long, folded strips, edge to edge along the sides of the table runner. Sew. Fold binding over to back of runner so that folded edge sits past the stitching line. Pin. Either hand sew binding in place on the back of runner or 'ditch stitch' on the top of the runner making sure the binding is caught at the back.
  3. Repeat #2 for binding the top and bottom edges of the table runner, folding the ends of the binding over neatly at the corners.
  4. Large Present - Fabric 4: cut 2 pieces 11.5cm x 9cm and 2 pieces 4.5cm x 9cm Fabric 3: cut 2 pieces 4.5cm x 9cm and one piece 5cm x 18cm. Cut 2 right-angled triangles with short sides 6.5cm. Lay out all pieces on table to match picture. Sew the 3 rectangles on the left-hand side together, sew the 3 rectangles on the right-hand side together, sew the middle piece to the 2 sides. Press. Apply Heat n Bond to this square and to the 2 triangles. Make 3 large presents.
  5. Medium Present - Fabric 5: cut 2 pieces 14cm x 7cm. Fabric 2: cut 1 piece 14cm x 3.5cm. Cut 2 right-angled triangles with short sides 4.5cm. Lay out all pieces on table to match picture. Sew the middle piece to the 2 sides. Press. Apply Heat n Bond to this square and to the 2 triangles. Make 2 medium presents.
  6. Remove paper and iron presents and bows on to table runner in the appropriate places.
  7. Satin stitch around presents and bows.

  • Fabric 4: X20 Scandi Stag Tree - Red - 35cm
  • Fabric 5: X20 Scandi Snow - Natural/Red - 35cm
  • Fabric 6: X20 Scandi Snow - Red - 35cm
  • Fabric 7: X20 Scandi Peace - Natural/Red - 35cm
  • Fabric 8: X20 Scandi Peace - Red - 35cm
  • Fabric 9: X20 Scandi Mini Str - Natural/Red - 10cm
  • Fabric 10: X20 Scandi Mini Str - Red - 10cm

INSTRUCTIONS

Make 1st placemat:

  1. Fabric 1: Cut 1 square 14cm x 14cm, cut 4 squares 7.5cm x 7.5cm, cut 8 right-angle triangles

with 8cm sides. Fabric 2: Cut 8 right-angle triangles with 8cm sides.

  1. Sew all Fabric 1 triangles to Fabric 2 triangles along the diagonal edge using a 6mm seam. Press.
  2. Using the picture as a guide, sew the left-hand side of the block together using 2 Fabric 1 squares and 2 sewn squares, sew the right-hand side of the block together in the same way. Press.
  3. Sew the centre panel of the block by attaching 2 sewn squares together for the top and 2 sewn squares together for the bottom. Attach these 2 pieces to the centre square. Press.
  4. Attach the left and right-hand panels to the centre panel to complete the block. Press.
  5. Fabric 4: Keeping fabric pattern correct, cut 2 pieces 4cm x 26cm and attach to the top and bottom of the block. Open out and press. Cut 2 pieces 9cm x 30cm for the sides of the block, attach, open out and press.
  6. Lay backing face down on table, smooth wadding on top of backing and centre the finished placemat top right side up on top of wadding.
  7. Using Fabric 4, cut 2 strips 7.5cm x 40cm and 2 strips 7.5cm x 35cm. Fold each strip in half lengthwise and press.
  8. Attach the two 40cm strips to the top and bottom edges of the placemat. Fold binding over to back of placemat so that folded edge sits past the stitching line. Pin. Either hand sew binding in place on the back or 'ditch stitch' from the front of the placemat making sure the binding is caught at the back.
  9. Repeat #10 using the two 35cm strips to bind the sides of the table placemat, folding the ends of the binding over neatly at the corners.
  10. Small Present - Fabric 11: cut 2 pieces 7.5cm x 3.5cm. Fabric 10: cut 1 piece 7.5cm x 3cm. Cut 2 triangles with short sides 2cm and 3cm. Lay out all pieces on table to match picture. Sew the middle piece to the 2 sides. Press. Apply Heat n Bond to this square and to the 2 triangles. Remove paper and iron present and bow on to centre square of placemat. Satin stitch around present and bow.
  11. Repeat steps #1 to #12, alternating fabrics, to make remaining 5 placemats.
