PIRATE COIN PURSE

Pirate Coin Purse Project

LEVEL: EASY

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • 2 x pieces of cotton fabric each measuring 20 cm high by 17 cm wide
  • 8 cm square of contrasting cotton fabric
  • 8 cm square of iron-on Heat n'Bond
  • 1.2 m of jute or string
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Tape measure/ruler
  • Iron
  • Safety pin
  • Sewing machine
  • Matching thread

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1 - Using an iron, fuse the Heat n' Bond paper to the back of the contrasting fabric square. Using the X template provided, trace X onto paper side of Heat n'Bond paper. Using sharp scissors cut X out from fabric square. Peel off the backing paper and place the glue side of the X on the right side of one of the fabric bag pieces, 4cm up from bottom edge and centred across the width. Fuse X to fabric with iron. Top stitch around all edges of the X.

Step 2 With the right sides of fabric pieces facing, pin pieces together aligning all outer edges. Sew down the left side edges of fabric only by 2.5 cm. Leave a 1.5 cm gap and then sew remaining side together to the base. Repeat on the right side of fabrics. Sew base edges together. Clip corners and press seams open.

Step 3 - To create the casing for the cord, press over 2.5 cm along the top edge of fabric bag to the wrong side of bag. Stitch casing in place 1.5 cm down from top pressed edge. Turn bag right way out and press. Cut jute string into two equal lengths. With the help of a safety pin, thread jute string through the opening in the left side seam of the casing and around the bag back out the same opening. Even the length of the cord and knot ends securely. Repeat threading the remaining length of cord through the right side opening to an even length and knotting ends securely.
