Note: The bag is worked with 2 strands of yarn held together to make an 8ply yarn. In the main body of the bag, rows of chain are worked in each corner of the bag, these will later be hooked up through each other to form a row of raised chain up the length of the bag and into the handles. So it is not necessary to worry about the look of the bag until you are finished.

MAKING LADDER CHAIN

We now bring the ladder of chains up each side and hold in the last row with a stitch marker. Starting at the base of the 1st column of 10ch lps , insert a hook from the front through 3ch lp of round 1, pick up the 1st 10ch lp
directly above it and pull it through the lp to the front, then with the ch lp still on the hook, pick up the 2nd lp and pull it through the 1st lp, continue pulling the loops up until you have pulled the 2nd last 10ch lp, and hold it with a stitch marker to the last lp. Repeat the instruction above for the three other sides,

MAKING STRAPS

Join Mc with a slst into the 4 st on the left on any ladder corner

1: 1dc in next st, 1tr in next 2 sts, 1tr in 10ch lp, 10ch, 1tr in 10ch lp, 1tr in next 2 sts, 1dc in next, turn

2: 1ch, sk dc, 1dc in next st, 1tr in next 2 sts, 1tr in 10ch lp, 10ch, 1tr in 10ch lp, 1tr in next 2 sts, 1dc in next st, turn repeat row 2 thirteen times

16: 1ch, sk 1dc, 1dc in next st, 1tr in next 2 sts, 1tr in 10ch lp, 6ch, 1tr in 10ch lp, 1tr in next 2 sts, 1dc in next st, turn

17: 1ch, sk 1dc, 1dc in next st, 1tr in next 2 sts, 1tr in 6ch lp, 3ch, 1tr in 6ch lp, 1tr in next 2 sts, 1dc in next st, turn. Bring the ladder chain up the strap ending with the 6ch lp pulled through the 10ch lp and the 3ch lp pulled through the 6ch lp, now keep loop on stitch marker

18: 1ch, sk 1dc, 1dc in next 3 sts, 1dc in 3ch lp, 1dc in next 3 sts, slst into last dc, finish off. Repeat for other 3 handle strap. Seam two straps together to form a handle. Repeat for other two straps.

FINISHING

To work a border around the top of the bag, using MC yarn pick up a slst in the outside seam of the handle and work a row of dc evenly down the handle, across the bag and back up the other side of the handle, join with a slst into 1st dc, then work a row of crab stick around. Finish off. Repeat for other side of the bag,
Then working on the inside of the seam of handle, repeat border rows working down the handle, across the front up the second handle, across the back and up the other side of the 1st handle. Sew in all ends.
