What does the quilting term 'paper piercing' mean?
The quilting term 'paper piercing' generally refers to the use of a paper template used to sew a foundation pieced quilt. Broadly speaking it involves sewing your fabric pieces directly onto the paper template to ensure the blocks are perfect every time.
Fabric is pinned to the unprinted side of a foundation paper while the edges overlap the drawn lines. Seams are sewn on the front of the foundation paper template along on the printed lines. The overlapped edges then become seam allowances on the back. Sewing along the lines ensures your blocks are perfect so that there is no misalignment as your quilt grows.
Using proper quilting paper enables the paper to be cleanly and easily torn away once the quilt is finished, without tearing your stitches.
