Can I purchase denim and Tencel fabrics at Spotlight?

Yes, you can. Here at Spotlight, you will find a huge collection of denim and denim-look fabrics, including cotton, Tencel and fabrics made from other fibres. You can choose from various weights of fabric and a large range of designs including stripes, polka dots, tie-dye, and foil coated denim and much more. The range also includes stretch denim.

What exactly is denim and how is it made?

Denim is a strong, durable fabric constructed in a twill weave using blue (indigo) and white coloured yarns. The blue yarns are the lengthwise or "warp" threads while the white yarns run across the fabric width (the "weft" threads). Traditionally, denim was constructed from 100% cotton yarn but these days it is often blended with polyester which helps against shrinking, and makes it less easy to crease. Lycra is often added to create stretch denim.

The reason Denim fades over time, is that the blue dye used on the threads wears, leaving more of the white visible.

Is Tencel the same as denim?

No, TENCEL® - is in fact a brand name for a fibre which is also called lyocell, manufactured by the Lenzing AG company. It is obtained from eucalyptus trees that are grown on farms using sustainable farming practices. Tencel fibres are spun into yarns which are woven into textiles that are soft, absorbent, very strong when wet or dry, resistant to wrinkles and drape well. Tencel is often blended with natural fabrics such as hemp, cotton and wool.

What can denim and denim-type fabrics be used for?

Of course, the first thing anyone associates with denim is Jeans. Jeans and pants made from denim became popular as workers' clothing but are now worn by people of all ages and are available for every budget. But many more items can be made from denim, including skirts, pinafores, jackets, bags, and caps. It is used to cover books and storage baskets, create interior design objects and craft items including cushions, baskets and even jewellery.

How do I care for denim fabrics?

As stated above, denim is a strong and durable fabric and it is happy to be machine washed, but it can be prone to shrinking, especially when new, and the colour will inevitably fade over time. You may also find that the fabric becomes softer and is less likely to hold its shape after many washing cycles. Special effects can be created with denim fabrics such as artificial patches made by washing the denim with a hard object (originally done with stones) or by adding bleach.

Does Spotlight sell other types of fabric as well?
