FLEECE & FELT MITTENS

Fleece & Felt Mittens Project

Level: Easy

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1 - To create mitten template, roughly trace around a child's hand onto a piece of paper leaving a gap between their hand and the mitten outline of roughly 2-3cms. This will ensure there is enough room for their hand to move around inside the mitten. Use a ruler to neaten the edges and create a neat mitten pattern like the below. Add 1cm seam allowance around the outside shape and 2cm at the hem or opening of the mitten.

Step 2 - Trace around this shape onto the fleece and cut out 2 pieces per mitten.

Step 3 - Now comes the fun part. Decided on the design for your mitten, we chose unicorns and dinosaurs. Cut shapes out of felt for the different features of your design.

  • Dinosaur: We cut out one long spikey shape for the spine of the dinosaur, the piece will be sewn in the seam of the mitten when sewn together. We then cut out spots and teeth for the body.
  • Unicorn: Cut out a large circular piece of felt for the nose again the base of the nose will be sewn into the seam of the mittens. To create the hair for the unicorn we cut rectangle of felt roughly 5cm long by 4cm wide and then used scissors to cut smaller strips into the felt but not all the way through. Repeat this with a few colours. We also cut out eyelashes, ears and a horn.

Step 4 - Now it's time to sew it all together.

  • For the dinosaur, pin the mittens together right side facing in and then sandwich the spikey felt for the spine and the teeth into the seam of the mittens. Sew around the entire mitten shape with a 1cm seam allowance. Use scissors to snip into the curved seam so that it will sit nice and flat when turned right side out.
  • For the unicorn, first pin and sew the multiple layers of fringed felt so that it creates the hair. Start from the back and slowly work forward over lapping each layer of felt until finished. Then with right sides of the mittens facing in place the pieces of felt for the nose inside. Sew around the entire mitten shape with a 1cm seam allowance. Again use scissors to snip into the curved seam so that it will sit nice and flat when turned right side out.

Step 5 - Time to decorate! Using a hot glue gun attach the other bits of felt, joggle eyes and pom poms to bring your mittens to life!

Step 6 - Leave to cool and dry before wearing.
