Trosko Sloth Kids Quilt & Cushion Project

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • Fabrics are from Trosko range
  • 50cm Fabric A - Trosko Sloth, multi
  • 50cm Fabric B - Trosko Sloth on Tree, blue
  • 50cm Fabric C - Trosko Birds, Blue
  • 1.3m Fabric D - Trosko Leaves, white/blue (includes binding)
  • 1.3m Trosko Sloth on Tree, blue or fabric of choice for backing
  • 1.3m x 1.2m cotton/bamboo batting
  • Matching Gutermann 100% cotton thread
  • Rotary cutter, mat & quilters rulers
  • Quilting pins, tape measure
  • Scissors, seam ripper
  • Hand needle
  • Sewing machine with 1/4" foot & walking foot
  • 1 x size 16 Cushion insert (41cm x 41cm)

SIZE

Quilt measures: 40 1/2" x 44 1/2" (102cm x 113cm)

Note:All fabrics should be 100% cotton, washed & pressed.1/4" seam allowance used throughout unless otherwise indicated. Read all instructions carefully before commencing the quilt.

INSTRUCTIONS

CUTTING

All strips are cut across the width of fabric unless otherwise
stated.

  • From Fabric A cut - 1 x 8 1/2" strip crosscut into 5 rectangles 8 1/2" x 4 1/2" and 5 rectangles 8 1/2" x 2 1/2", 1 x 4 1/2" strip crosscut into 4 rectangles 4 1/2" x 8 1/2", a1 x 2 1/2" strip crosscut into 4 rectangles 2 1/2" x 8 1/2".
  • From Fabric B cut - 1 x 8 1/2" strip crosscut into 4 rectangles 8 1/2" x 4 1/2" and 4 rectangles 8 1/2" x 2 1/2", 1 x 4 1/2" strip crosscut into 4 rectangles 4 1/2" x 8 1/2", and 1 x 2 1/2" strip crosscut into 4 rectangles 2 1/2" x 8 1/2".
  • From Fabric C cut - 1 x 8 1/2" strip crosscut into 3 rectangles 8 1/2" x 4 1/2" and 3 rectangles 8 1/2" x 2 1/2" 1 x 4 1/2" strip crosscut into 4 rectangles 4 1/2" x 8 1/2" and 1 x 2 1/2" strip crosscut into 4 rectangles 2 1/2" x 8 1/2".
  • From Fabric D cut - 1 x 8 1/2" strip crosscut into 12 x 2 1/2" strips for Block 1, 3 x 2 1/2" strips crosscut into 12 x 8 1/2" strips for Block 2, 9 x 2 1/2" strips for borders and binding and 2 rectangles 16 1/2" x 12 1/2" for cushion back.

BLOCKS

Note - As fabrics re directional, ensure sloths and birds are right way up.

Step 1. Block 1 - Lay out Fabric A vertical rectangles and Fabric D strips to make 5 of these blocks. Sew together pressing seams in one direction.

Step 2. Block 2 - Lay out Fabric A horizontal rectangles and Fabric D strips to make 4 of these blocks. Sew together pressing seams in one direction.

Step 3. Using Fabric B - repeat step 1 to make 4 of Block 1 and repeat step 2 to make 4 of Block 2.

Step 4. Using Fabric C - repeat step 1 to make 3 of Block 1 and repeat step 2 to make 4 of Block 2.

QUILT TOP

Step 5. Arrange 20 blocks - 7 Fabric A, 7 Fabric B and 6 Fabric C into 5 rows with 4 blocks in each row. Refer to photo for placement if desired. Set aside remaining 4 blocks for cushion front.

Step 6. Sew the blocks in each row together. Press seams in one direction alternating the direction in each row. Sew the rows together matching seams. Press seams in one direction.

Step 7. Border - Sew one 2 1/2" Fabric D border strip to each side of the quilt. Press seams towards border and trim off any excess fabric. Sew remaining strips to the top and bottom of the quilt, press and trim off any excess fabric.

Step 8. Layer the backing, batting and quilt top and baste together. Quilt as desired.

Step 9. Join the 5 x 2 1/2" binding strips together on the bias to make one long strip. Press in half lengthwise and bind mitering corners. Attach a label or sign and date your quilt.

CUSHION

Step 10. Arrange the 4 remaining blocks into 2 rows of 2 blocks. Sew the blocks in each row together. Press seams in one direction alternating the direction in each row. Sew the rows together matching seams. Press seams in one direction. Topstitch ¼" on both sides of all seams.

Step 11. For the cushion backs, sew a double hem along one 16 1/2" long side of each rectangle - fold and press under 1/4" then another 1/4" and topstitch hem in place.

Step 12. With cushion front right side up, place one hemmed back piece face down on top, aligning top and side raw edges with hemmed edge towards the centre. Pin in place. Place other piece face down on top aligning
bottom and side edges with hemmed edge overlapping the other piece in the centre. Pin in place.

Step 13. Sew together around all four sides using 1/4" seam allowance. Clip corners and overlock or zigzag seams to neaten.

Step 14. Turn cover right side out, press well and place insert into cover with back edges overlapping.
