  • Backing fabric (Florabelle Floral Mint) - 180 x 150cm
  • Cotton wadding - 180 x 150cm
  • 5 contrast Florabelle fabrics for borders and binding:

    • Fabric D - Mini Floral - .5m
    • Fabric E - Birds with Flowers - 2m

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Lay backing on table, smooth wadding on top of backing and centre cot panel on top of wadding. Birch Quilt Basting Spray can be used to do this step but is optional.
  2. Cut Fabric A (Birdcages) strips 4.5cm wide and pin along both sides of panel (all thicknesses) and sew using a 5mm seam allowance. Press strips open to extend panel. Pin strips to top and bottom of panel including over previous strips. Press strips open.
  3. Cut Fabric B (Leaves) and Fabric C (Birds) strips 7.5cm wide. Join Fabric strips B and C as required (see picture for placement) and add these to the quilt in the same way as for Fabric A strips. Press strips open.
  4. Cut Fabric A (Birdcages) and Fabric D (Mini Floral) strips 7.5cm wide. Join Fabric strips A and D as required (see picture for placement) and add these to the quilt in the same way as before. Press strips open.
  5. Cut Fabric E (Birds with Flowers) strips 7.5cm wide and attach along both long sides. Press strips open. Pin strips to top and bottom edges and sew in place. Press strips open.
  6. Cut Fabric A (Birdcages) strips 4.5cm wide and attach to quilt as before, long sides, then short sides, pressing strips as you go.
  7. Cut Fabric C (Birds) strips 4.5cm wide and attach to quilt as before, long sides, then short sides, pressing strips as you go.
  8. Cut Fabric B (Leaves) strips 4.5cm wide and attach to quilt as before, long sides, then short sides, pressing strips as you go.
  9. Trim backing and wadding to edge of Fabric B (Leaves) borders.
  10. Cut binding Fabric A (Birdcages) into strips 9cm wide and iron in half lengthwise. Pin these long, folded strips, edge to edge along the sides of the quilt. Sew. Fold binding over to back of quilt so that folded edge sits past the stitching line. Pin. Either hand sew binding in place on the back of quilt or 'ditch stitch' from the front of the quilt making sure the binding is caught at the back.
  11. Repeat #10 for binding the top and bottom edges of the quilt, folding the ends of the binding over neatly at the corners. Finished!
