ICED DYED SOCKS

Iced Dyed Socks Project

LEVEL: EASY

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • White cotton socks
  • Rit All-Purpose Powder Dye in 3 - 4 colours that blend well together
  • Ice (enough to completely cover your fabric)
  • Deep Plastic tub
  • Drying rack to fit over tub
  • Small plastic spoon
  • Rubber gloves
  • Paper towels
  • Mild detergent
  • Plastic table cover
  • Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative (recommended)
  • Spray bottle (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS

Tip: Be sure to use Rit powder dye, not the liquid, because it stays where you sprinkle it which gives you better control of the colours.

  1. Cover table with plastic. Gather supplies.
  2. Pre-wash socks with fabric detergent, rinse and leave wet.
  3. Completely crumple wet socks into small, flat balls.
  4. Place crumpled socks on top of drying rack, over the plastic tub (to catch dripping dye).
  5. Cover socks completely with ice. Different ice sizes will yield different patterns.
  6. Wearing rubber gloves, open dye packages. Use spoon to sprinkle dye on the ice. More powder will yield darker results. For more white space, sprinkle dye on as you might sprinkle salt on food. Adding colour in sections will yield more of an ombre effect.
  7. Let the ice melt completely through the fabric overnight.
  8. Remove socks from the rack.
  9. Recommended: To enhance the colour and reduce colour bleeding, use Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative immediately after dyeing and before washing. Pour fixative into a spray bottle and spray the socks. Let set for 20 minutes.
  10. Rinse socks with cool water until rinse water begins to run clear.
  11. Wash in warm water with mild detergent, rinse and dry.
