Flannelette Baskets Project

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

  • 60cm of 112cm wide of printed flannelette fabric (outer & hanging tab)
  • 40cm of 112cm wide of printed flannelette fabric (lining)
  • 40cm x 103cm of medium/heavy weight woven fusible interfacing (outer)
  • 20cm x 52cm of medium/heavy weight woven fusible interfacing (lining)
  • 40cm x 103cm of medium fusible pellon wadding (hanging tab)
  • Scissors, Pins, Tape measure/ruler
  • Sewing machine & matching thread
  • Iron

INSTRUCTIONS

STEP 1

Cut a 40cm high by 103cm wide piece from each of the printed flannelette fabric and lining fabrics. Fuse interfacing to the back of the outer cut piece of flannelette and the fuse the wadding to the back of the lining fabric.

STEP 2

With right sides together, fold outer fabric in half across the width aligning the two shorter raw edges. Pin and sew along the short and base edges using 1.5cm seam allowance. Clip corners and press seams open. Open out corners and box out by pinning across each corner to a length of 25cm. Sew and trim away excess corner fabric, press open seam. Turn basket right way out, press. Along the top edge of basket press under 1.5cm. Repeat method to make lining basket, but leave wrong way out. Place lining inside outer basket aligning all seams and top pressed
edges, pin top edges together.

STEP 3

Cut a 20cm high by 52cm wide piece of outer flannelette fabric for hanging tab. Fuse interfacing to the back of fabric. With right sides together, fold outer fabric in half across the width aligning the two shorter raw edges. Sew side edges together with a 1cm seam allowance. turn fabric right way out and press flat. Fold top raw edge down to meet base raw edges. Pin and baste edges together.

STEP 4

Unpin the back top edges of basket, and insert raw edges of the hanging tab in between the basket layers leaving *5cm
of folded top edge of tab protruding from basket edges. Pin edges back together encasing tab. Top stitch around the top of the basket 5mm in from the top edge and ensure that the tab is secured within the stitching. * make sure that this is wide enough for your hanging rod to thread through. Adjust to suit size of rod.
