INSTRUCTIONS

BALACLAVA (beg at crown)

Using C1 and 4.5mm hook, make a magic ring.

1st round - 2ch (does not count as a stitch), 12tr in ring, sl st into tr at beg ... 12 sts.

2nd round - 2ch, 2tr in same st, 2tr in each st around, sl st into tr at beg ... 24 sts.

3rd round - 2ch, 2tr in same st, 1tr in next st, * 2tr in next st, 1tr in next st, rep from * around, sl st into tr at beg ... 36 sts.

4th round - 2ch, 2tr in same st, 1tr in each of next 2 sts, * 2tr in next st, 1tr in each of next 2 sts, rep from * around, sl st into tr at beg ... 48 sts.

5th round - 2ch, 2tr in same st, 1tr in each of next 3 sts, * 2tr in next st, 1tr in each of next 3 sts, rep from * around, sl st into tr at beg ... 60 sts.

6th round - 2ch, 2tr in same st, 1tr in each of next 4 sts, * 2tr in next st, 1tr in each of next 4 sts, rep from * around, sl st into tr at beg ... 72 sts.

7th round - 2ch, 2tr in same st, 1tr in each of next 5 sts, * 2tr in next st, 1tr in each of next 5 sts, rep from * around, sl st into tr at beg ... 84 sts.

8th round - 2ch, 2tr in same st, 1tr in each of next 13 sts, * 2tr in next st, 1tr in each of next 13 sts, rep from * around, sl st into tr at beg ... 90 sts.

9th round- 2ch, 1tr in same st, 1tr in each st around, sl st into tr at beg.

10th - 17th rounds incl - Rep 9th round.

18th round - 2ch, 1tr in same st, 1tr in each of next 26 sts, 36ch, miss 36 sts, 1tr in each of last 27 sts, sl st into tr at beg.

19th round - 2ch, 1tr in same st, 1tr in each of next 26 sts, 1tr in each of next 36ch, 1tr in each of next 27 sts, sl st into tr at beg.

20th - 32nd rounds incl - Rep 9th round. Fasten off.

EYES (make 2)

Using C2 and 4.5mm hook, make 7ch.

1st round - 3tr in 4th ch from hook, 1tr in each of next 2ch, 7tr in last ch, rotate to work along other side of ch, 1tr in each of next 2 sts, 3tr in next st, sl st into ch next to tr at beg ... 18 sts.

2nd round - 3ch, 1tr in same st, (2tr in next st) 3 times, 1tr in each of next 2 sts, (2tr in next st) 7 times, 1tr in each of next 2 sts, (2tr in next st) 3 times, sl st into 3rd of 3ch ... 32 sts.

3rd round - 1ch, 1dc in same st, 1dc in each of next 6 sts, 1hdc in next st, 1tr in each of next 18 sts, 1hdc in next st, 1dc in each of next 5 sts, sl st into dc at beg. Fasten off. NOSE

Using C1 and 4.5mm hook, make a magic ring.

1st round - 3ch (count as 1tr), 11tr in ring, sl st into 3rd of 3ch at beg ... 12 sts.

Change to C2 - 2nd round - 3ch, 2tr in same st, 1tr in each of next 3 sts, * 5tr in next st, 1tr in each of next 3 sts, rep from * once more, 2tr into same st as 3ch at beg, sl st into 3rd of 3ch at beg ... 24 sts.

3rd round - 2ch, 2htr in same st, 1htr in each of next 7 sts, * 5htr in next st, 1htr in each of next 7 sts, rep from * once more, 2htr in same st as 2ch at beg, sl st into 2nd of 2ch at beg ... 36 sts. Fasten off.

ANTENNAE (make two)

Using C1 and 4.5mm hook, make 3ch.

1st round - Insert hook into 2nd ch from hook, yarn over and draw up a loop, insert hook into next ch, yarn over and draw up a loop (3 loops on hook).

2nd round - Carefully remove 2 loops from hook, holding onto these loops with your non-hook hand so they don't come undone, yarn over and draw through remaining loop on hook, insert hook into first removed loop, yarn over and draw through (2 loops on hook), insert hook into second removed loop, yarn over and draw through (3 loops on hook).

3rd - 10th rounds - Rep 2nd round. Cut yarn, leaving a 10cm tail, draw yarn through all 3 loops on hook and pull tightly. Trim yarn tail to 3.5cm.

FINISHING

DO NOT PRESS. Sew nose to balaclava as pictured. Using C1, embroider lines across the nose. Sew on eyes diagonally with narrower ends pointing to the centre top. Embroider highlights on the eyes. Sew the antennae on balaclava as pictured. Sew in ends.
