WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • 1.1m x 0.45m (45" x 19") cotton quilt batting
  • 0.25m fabric - dark green
  • 0.25m fabric - light green
  • Fat eighth fabric - red
  • 0.5m white fabric
  • 0.5m backing and binding
  • cotton thread
  • quilt ruler
  • rotary cutter
  • cutting mat
  • hand-stitching needle
  • basting pins or spray

 

MEASURMENTS

Finished runner is approximately 1.02m x 0.36m (40" x 14")

NOTES

  • Read through all pattern instructions before starting.
  • Unless otherwise specified seam allowance is 1/4" (0.6cm).
  • Press and starch fabric well before cutting and where advised throughout pattern instructions.
  • Press seams towards darker fabrics unless otherwise advised.
  • Fabric metreage requirements will vary according to selected fabric's width.

 

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1 - Using a rotary cutter, quilt ruler and large cutting mat, cut the following from your fabric:

Dark green:

  • 18 - 31⁄2" squares

Light green:

  • 18 - 31⁄2" squares

Red:

  • 15 - 21⁄2" squares

White:

  • 12 - 21⁄2" squares
  • 12 - 31⁄2" x 61⁄2" rectangles
  • 2 - 11⁄2" x 381⁄2" sashing strips
  • 2 - 11⁄2" x 141⁄2" sashing strips
  • 2 - 11⁄2" x 121⁄2" sashing strips

Step 2 - Make 6 Flying Geese with dark green fabric on left side and light green fabric on right side.

Step 3 - Lay a dark green 31⁄2" square on the left of a white 31⁄2" x 61⁄2" rectangle, aligning edges and corners. Pin to hold.

Step 4 - Stitch together from centre corner to bottom left corner.

Step 5 - Trim seam allowance to 1⁄4" and open out, pressing seam allowance towards green fabric.

Step 6 - Lay a light green 31⁄2" square on the right side of the rectangle, aligning edges and corners. Pin to hold.

Step 7 - Stitch together from centre corner to bottom right corner.

Step 8 - Trim seam allowance to 1⁄4" and open out, pressing seam allowance towards green fabric.

Step 9 - Make 6 Flying Geese with light green fabric on left side and dark green fabric on right side using the same process outlined in Step 2.

Step 10 - From the red and white 21⁄2" squares, piece together the berry blocks.

Step 11 - Lay a white square over a red square, aligning corners and edges. Stitch along one edge. Open out and press seams towards red fabric.

Step 12 - Lay a red square over the white end of the previous piece, aligning edges and corners. Stitch red and white square together. Open out and press seams towards red fabric.

Step 13 - Repeat Steps 11 to 12 five times to make a total of 6 red/white/red blocks.

Step 14 - Lay a red square over a white square, aligning corners and edges. Stitch along one edge. Open out and press seams towards red fabric.

Step 15 - Lay a white square over the red end of the previous piece, aligning edges and corners. Stitch red and white square together. Open out and press seams towards red fabric.

Step 16 - Repeat Steps 14 to 15 two times to make a total of 3 white/red/white blocks.

Step 17 - Sew together the berry pieces as shown to make three berry blocks in total. Open out and press seams to one side.

Step 18 - Piece together the final Christmas Berry blocks.

Step 19 - Sew together two Flying Geese blocks with one finished Berry block. Make sure that the Flying Geese are opposites, as shown.

Step 20 - Repeat step 19 twice to make a total of three Flying Geese/Berry blocks.

Step 21 - Sew together the remaining Flying Geese and dark/light 31⁄2" squares, as shown, to make a total of 6 blocks.

Step 22 - Sew together all pieces to make complete Christmas Berry blocks, as shown. Press seam allowances to one side.

Step 23 - Piece together the sashing strips with the Christmas Berry blocks.

Step 24 - Sew 2 - 11⁄2" x 121⁄2" sashing strips on opposite sides of a finished Christmas Berry block as shown. Open out and press seams towards Berry block.

Step 25 - Sew two remaining Christmas Berry blocks to block created above.

Step 26 - Sew a 11⁄2" x 381⁄2" sashing strips to each long sides of the runner. Open out and press seams towards the darker fabric.

Step 27 - Sew a 11⁄2" x 141⁄2" sashing strips to each end of the runner to finish the top. Open and press seams towards the darker fabric.

Step 28 - Press the finished quilt top. Trim the backing fabric to 4" larger than the runner top.

Step 29 - Construct a quilt sandwich by taping the backing fabric face down to a table or the floor ensuring there are no creases. Spray with basting spray if using.

Step 30 - Lay the quilt batting neatly over the top (spray again with basting spray if using), followed by the quilt top, face up. Smooth out creases. Baste with pins if not using spray. Machine or hand-quilt. Trim excess batting and fabric from the quilt and square up.

Step 31 - To make quilt binding, cut 2.5" wide strips across the width of the binding fabric. Join together along short edge to create one long strip that is approximately 135" long. Sew to front of quilt sandwich, fold over edge of quilt to the back and hand-stitch to attach.
