Justice League Messenger Bag Project

LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • 50cm 'Justice League' "Comic Strip" fabric
  • 90cm 'Prima' Homespun, white/blue - lining
  • 1.1m medium weight woven interfacing
  • Matching 'Gutermann' 100% cotton thread
  • Pins, tape measure
  • Scissors, seam ripper
  • Fabric marker
  • Sewing machine

Read all instructions carefully before commencing the project.

1cm seam allowance used throughout.

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1 - Cutting

Bag - Cut two 42cm x 30cm rectangles from Justice League fabric, homespun lining and interfacing.

Flap - Cut one 35cm x 27cm rectangle from Justice League fabric, homespun lining and interfacing.

Strap - Cut one strip 20cm wide x 110cm long from Justice League fabric and interfacing.

Inner Pocket - Cut one 20cm x 14cm rectangle from Justice League fabric, homespun lining and interfacing.

Step 2 - Fuse interfacing to wrong side of all Justice League fabric piece and cut a 4.5cm square from bottom corners of each bag and lining rectangle.

Step 3- Strap - fold in half lengthways, wrong sides facing and press. Open out, fold each long side into centre and press. Refold strap in half and press well. Topstitch down long sides 3mm in from edge then topstitch down centre.

Step 4- Pocket - Pin pocket and lining together, right sides facing and sew together around edge leaving 6cm opening in bottom edge. Trim corners, turn right side out, press and topstitch along top folded edge. Press in seam allowance at opening.

Step 5 - Centre pocket on right side of one bag lining, 7.5cm down from top edge and pin in place. Stitch pocket to lining down each side and across the bottom edge enclosing the opening within the stitching, leaving top edge open.

Step 6 - Flap - Round bottom corners of bag and lining flaps. Pin flap to lining, right sides facing and sew together around outside edge, leaving straight top edge open. Clip corners of flap and turn right side out. Press well. Baste top edge closed. Topstitch twice around outer edge, not top straight edge.

Step 7 - Bag - With right sides facing, pin bag pieces together down sides and across bottom edge and sew together. Press seams open. Repeat for bag lining.

Step 8 - To create bag base, open out bag, match side seam with bottom seam, pin and sew together. Repeat for the other corner and for bag lining. Trim all bottom corner seams to 6mm.

Step 9 - Turn bag right side out, push out corners of base and press well. Leave lining wrong side out.

Step 10 - Attach flap - Match side seams at top of bag, fold back in half and mark centre top edge with a pin. Fold flap in half matching side seams and mark the centre top edge. Place flap right sides together with back of bag matching centre pins. Pin flap to bag and baste.

Step 11 - Attach strap - Pin one end of strap right sides together at one side seam, aligning raw edges and matching centre row of stitching with side seam of bag and baste. Ensuring strap is not twisted, repeat to pin other end of strap to other side seam and baste.

Step 12- Attach Lining - Match side seams at top of lining, fold front (without pocket) in half and mark centre top edge with a pin. Measure 7.5cm each side of centre and mark with fabric marker, this is the opening for turning through.

Step 13 - Insert bag into lining, right sides together.

Note - The bag with the strap will be a bit squashed in the lining. Match side seams, centre front and back then pin together around top edge leaving opening for turning through. Sew together.

Step 14 - Turn bag right side out through opening, push lining into bag and press well.

Press edges of opening to inside and topstitch twice around the top edge of bag, enclosing the opening within the stitching, then a second row of stitching.
