Drill Organiser Bag Project

LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • .9m of 112cm wide printed cotton duck fabric (outer & inner pocket)
  • .5m of 112cm wide printed cotton duck fabric (lining & straps)
  • Sewing thread
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Ruler/Tape measure
  • Sewing Machine
  • Iron

INSTRUCTIONS

 

Note: 1.5cm seam allowance is used unless specified

 

Cut out:

Outer: 73cm wide by 43cm high

Inner pockets: 73cm wide by 47cm high

Lining: 73cm wide by 43cm high

Straps: 2x 7.5cm wide by 40cm high

 

Step 1- Inner pocket & lining
With wrong sides facing, fold and press inner pocket piece in half aligning top with base raw edges. Top stitch along length of fabric 5mm in from the fold. Baste raw edges together.

Pin the pocket to the right side of the lining fabric, aligning the base and side edges.
Measure up 7.5cm from the base of the fabric and sew a horizontal line of stitching across the whole width of pocket.

Measure and mark the vertical dividers on the pocket as per desired width from the top of the pocket down to the horizontal sewing line. Sew the dividers through all layers only to the height of the pocket.

Cut out a 6cm square from the base left and right corners. Cut a rectangle measuring 6cm high by 9cm wide from the center of the base of the lining.

With right sides facing fold lining in half aligning the side and base edges.
Sew side edges together, press open. Sew base edges together, press open. Open and flatten out cut out corners and aligning raw edges. Sew edges together to create the mitered box base of bag.

Press under 1.5cm along top raw edge to wrong side of lining.

 

Step 2- Outer bag
Cut out corners from the outer fabric as per for lining.
With right sides facing fold outer fabric in half aligning the side and base edges.
Sew side edges together, press open. Sew base edges together, press open. Open and flatten out cut out corners and aligning raw edges. Sew edges together to create the mitered box base of bag.
Turn bag right way out, press seams.

 

 

Step 3- Straps
Press under 1cm along both of the long edges of both of the strap fabric pieces. Press straps in half aligning long pressed edges. Pin and sew in place by top stitching along both long edges 5mm in from the edge. Press straps flat.
Pin one strap to the top edge of each side of the bag, aligining raw edges and having a 10cm gap between the looped straps. Baste in place.

Press under 1.5cm along top raw edge to wrong side of outer bag, with the straps protruding upwards.
Place lining inside the outer bag, matching side seam and pin together along the pressed edges. Ensuring that the straps are out and in position, sew bag together by top stitching along the top 5mm in from the pressed edge. Press top edge.
