BABY CHANGE TABLE MATTRESS COVER

Baby Change Table Mattress Cover Project

Level: Easy

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • 2m of Furnishings Fabric
  • Pins, scissors, measuring tape
  • Sewing machine and matching thread
  • Foam piece

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1 - Measure the dresser or table that you want the change mat to fit onto. Have a piece of foam cut to these measurements and roughly 8-10cm high.

Step 2 - To create the envelope style pattern for this, rule out on a large piece of paper the same measurements of the top of your foam block. Ours was 40cm wide by 60cm long. Then add the measurement of the gusset (8cm) to the shorter (40cm) sides of the rectangle. You then want to divide the longer side of the rectangle (60cm) in half and add 10cm to the amount to allow the pieces to overlap on the back side. To finish add 4cm seam allowance to these ends. Now you can work on the sides of the pattern. Add half the gusset measurement to the longer sides, when sewn together this will create the 8cm gusset required. Add 1cm seam allowance to the longer edges and your pattern is now complete. If your pattern is too long for your fabric you can add in seams, and sew the piece together before doing the next step.

Your pattern should look something like the below (please reference the downloadable project sheet).

Step 3 - Cut your rectangle pattern piece (or pieces) out of your fabric. Overlock or zigzag stitch the edges of your fabric then press back the short sides seams allowance (4cm) and sew down to create a neat edge.

Step 4 - Turn your fabric wrong side out and fold your fabric so the sewn edges in step 3 are centred and overlap in the centre back panel by 10cm. Use a measuring tape and pin in place to secure.

Step 5 - Pin the long edges (60cm) together and sew in place with a 1cm seam allowance.

Step 6 - To make the square corners of the cover, fold the fabric so the side seams are centred and flatten the corners of the rectangle out. This will create a triangle shape with the end of the seam at the top of the triangle. Measure in 4cm from the corner tip (this is half the gusset measurement) and pin through both layers of fabric. Sew a straight line across the corner, your stitch line should follow and go through the 4cm marked position. This will create a triangle shape as shown. The sewn line should be 8cm in length, equal to your gusset measurement. Repeat on all 4 sides. This will create the 8cm gusset for your cover.

Step 7 - Once all the corners have been sewn, turn the cover inside out and use hands to push out the corners neatly. If you want, you can cut the excess fabric off and over lock or zig zag the seam allowance.

Step 8 - Insert the foam into your cover and place on dresser to finish!
