What are the four stages of making a quilt?
Quilting is a fun and practical skill to learn and can add a whole new dimension to your dressmaking projects. There are four main stages in the quilting process:
1) Preparation: It is recommended that you hand wash your chosen fabric in cold water prior to beginning your project. This also allows for the changes in size and shapes that fabrics can undergo when it is wet. This is particularly important as the different materials that you use for your quilting project may shrink at different rates, resulting in your project becoming unsightly.
2) Quilt top: Making your quilt top involves cutting and sewing the blocks of material together. To make the process easier, use an iron frequently to ensure that the fabric stays flat. We would suggest that you lay out your fabrics before you begin sewing to give you an overall idea of the design.
3) Quilting: Quilting itself, is the process of sandwiching the wadding between the quilt top and backing fabric, sewing them together to create your quilted project. The most common type of stitch used for quilting is a basic running stitch, however, there are various techniques and methods that you can use.
4) Binding: Add beautiful binding to obtain that professional finish and to ensure that your edges stay neat and tidy. Fold the binding over each of the corners, using pins to secure it before sewing.
Do you have any other tips for the quilting beginner?
If you are new to the world of quilting, there are some things that you can consider to help make sure that your quilting project is a success. When you are first starting out, find a quilt pattern that uses larger pieces. This will mean that you can complete the project quicker, and as there are fewer seams to sew there is less room for error.
We recommend that you start small, create a miniature quilted project using sample fabrics, and stick to a simple design. Practice makes perfect, so take it slowly and start with something easy. It is important that you use needles that have been purposely designed for quilting, as these have a sharper tip which has been purposely designed to penetrate the three layer of fabric. After you have completed your project, it is not recommended that you machine wash your finished quilt. Hand wash in cool temperatures, remove excess water, and allow to air dry in the shade, to prevent damage from the sun. Do not allow fabrics to come into contact with harsh chemicals, such as chlorine and bleach, and ironing should be conducted on a medium or low setting only.
