Which belting would be right for my project?

At Spotlight, we have a wide selection of top-quality belting and webbing, ready and waiting for your dressmaking project. Providing you with incredible options for apparel, quilting and sewing projects, belting is a great way to add a unique factor to your next sewing project. If you are shopping for belting, the most important thing to consider is the material itself. Polypropylene belting is commonly used for so many different crafting projects and is moisture resistant, durable and versatile. If you are looking for belting that is slightly stronger, nylon has one of the highest breaking limits. Alternatively, if you are shopping for an all-natural version, consider cotton belting. While this is not quite as popular as the other two options, cotton is naturally hypoallergenic, is entirely natural, and has excellent breathability.

Do you have any tips for creating my own belt?

Making your own fabric belt does not need to be a challenge, and this can be a fun project while also adding structure and silhouette to your final piece. You will require a buckle, fabric, belting or interfacing, and thread, and we advise that you use a sewing machine.

  • First of all, measure the intended wearer to ensure a perfect fit. You will need to consider where you would like the belt to place, for example, whether it will sit on the waist or lower at the hips.
  • Cut out your fabric and one strip of interfacing to the correct length the width should be approximately one inch wider than the buckle you have chosen.
  • Pin it all together, hand stitch, and then run it through the machine twice, with even spacing b between your stitches. Use pinking shears to trim away any excess fabric while you are stitching and ensure that your lines are accurate.
  • Iron your bet flat, and add the buckle for a belt that will complement your outfit perfectly.
