Can I purchase felt and fur fabrics at Spotlight?

Yes, Spotlight stocks a number of felt fabrics and a wide range of different fur type fabrics, which are very popular for making clothing, throws, edging around hoods or hats, slippers, cushions and many other craft items, as well as toys and other accessories. Felt can be used for craft projects, to cover items, and make clothing and even baby shoes.

What is felt and how is it made?

Felt is a dense, non-woven fabric without any warp or weft. Instead, felted fabric is made from matted and compressed fibres or fur with no apparent system of threads. Felt is produced by pressing together the fibres and/or fur using heat, moisture, and pressure. Usually, felt is made from wool that is mixed with a synthetic fibre to create sturdy, resilient fabric. Felt can vary in width, length, colour, or thickness depending on its intended use. It is often used for padding and lining, and as it does not fray or unravel, it can be easy to work with. Felt can be dyed easily and is usually available in a range of colours.

What types of fur fabric are available at Spotlight?

The fur fabrics at Spotlight span a wide range of styles, from fun fur, ideal for creating kids toys or edges around hoods, to beautiful faux fur that is nearly indistinguishable from the real thing, and which can be made into coats, accessories or used for quality upholstering projects. As the faux fur is backed by a material rather than leather, it is usually easier to sew with too.

Some of the fur fabrics at Spotlight are sold in pre-cut pieces, ideal if you only need a small quantity for your project, while others are available by the metre.

Choose from short, soft fur fabrics as well as longer fur, and other animal skin effects such as Cheetah and Ocelot, in a range of different colours and designs. Faux fur may look very much like real fur but it must be remembered it does not allow the skin to breathe quite as easily as it is usually made from man-made fibres.

How can I care for faux fur fabrics?

The best choice for washing faux fur items is hand washing. Use cool water and a very small amount of gentle detergent. Gently move the fur through the water for no more than 10 or 15 minutes and avoid excessive wringing. Rinse well and allow to drip dry. If you do want to use a washing machine, use a high-efficiency washer on the gentle cycle for best results.

To dry your fur fabric, Do NOT put the garment in a tumble dryer. Use an indoor drying rack to dry the item flat or place on a hanger and hang to dry. Reposition it regularly to avoid crush marks on the faux fur. Keep out of direct sunlight and heat, and allow up to 24 to 48 hours for the fur to dry. Do not wear or use until it is completely dry. Remember that high heat can melt the faux fur fibres and cause matting. Once this has happened, there is not much you can do to reverse the damage.

Fluff up fur that looks slightly matted after cleaning by brushing it gently with a soft bristled brush. You can also put the item in a tumble dryer if you have an air only setting, but make sure no heat is applied to the fur.
